If your talking about not hooking the wireing controls up then yes you dont have to all they do is simply lock the converter. Without them it wont hurt nothing.

If you are going to run a non lock converter you need to buy a non lock up conversion kit.

So basically I don't need to use a lock up?

If you have a lock-up convertor and don't lock it then it will generate heat ( bad )
If you get a non-lockup convertor then you have no worries

All right so is it better for to have a lock up or not.

the lock up is there so you can get better mpg while crusing at a constant speed. if you dont use the lock up then your coverter will be constantly slipping and it will make alot of heat. you can put in the lock up and then put a switch in there so you have it when ya want and you can turn it off when ya dont. for me i want it because i got a 4.11 rear gear and i want to be able to drive a long distance without having my engine work so hard. so i say get the lock up converter and put a switch on it.

ALright so this would be a every day driver and street race car some times so i'll just change my servo torque converter and get this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-70248/?rtype=10 so i can set it my self.

Do u have to drop the pan to install the B&M converter lock up?

Basic mods to make the weak 200-4R last (a little longer) is to:
Get a trans cooler if you don't already
TCI Trans-Scat Valve Body Kit #386000 $117
Hughes 2-qt Xtra Deep Pan #HP3880 $198
CK Performance Billet aluminum servo $130

TCI Breakaway, or maybe even the StreetFighter lock-up torque converter would be the ticket for you with the 3.73 gears

No, you don't 'need' a lockup function but it will generate more heat from slippage without it working. If you switch to an actual non lockup converter, it will genetate less heat, but you need to mod the 2004r to work with a non-lockup converter.

When racing, you don't have the conveter locked, so it's your call wether you want one or not. Lockups are better for the street and non-lockups are marginally better for outright racing because they're a little more efficient.

If you go with a lockup kit, get the Painless kit. That B&M kit only locks your converter at X speed and will do so everytime. I've heard it's kind of annoying. The Painless kit is easy to install and will lock/unlock depending on vacuum ( aka throttle ) and will also unlock anytime you hit the brake pedal. It'a only downside is it will apply lockup any time you get into 4th no matter what your speed, but it's not something that's really annoying. I have the Painless kit, and it works great.

P.S. A QUALITY lockup converter is almost as good as a quality non-lockup converter as far as slippage goes, so that's usually the best way to go. Buy a cheapo converter ( wether a lockup or non-lockup ) and you'll most likely regret it sooner or later. Buy a GOOD one and don't look back. Don't cheap out to save a couple of bucks.
