the transmission bracket i have dont alow it to go all the way foward into park can i drill the holes a bit to move the 1/16 its needing or what other option is thereI don't know what shifter you have or transmission. I would shift the transmission by hand into drive. Shift the shifter into drive position and adjust shift cable and install on trany. That is what I have done. Gets you pretty close.
if i wantd to upgrade my carb on my olds 307 what route shall ingox2 what he said. Line it up in either D or R on both the trans and the shifter and you should get every gear but low even with the wrong shifter. Most of your adjustment will be in that bolt that connects to the trans. If the trans bracket and cable don't match then you cannot get them to work.
A work around ( sunday afternoon fix ) is to cut the bracket on the transmission ( the one that the cable attaches to and bolts to the pan ) it can be cut and a flat bar welded to one side and a groove in the other laying them overtop and bolted together again. Drill a couple holes and some 1/4" bolts thru both the holes and the groove to make it adjustable for another inch or so of travel. Pretty common when we would swap a 4 speed trans into a 3 speed equipped console car when we would not get the related 4 speed shifter, bracket or cable ( works the other way too ). Make what you need and make it work with what you got.
Once that is sorted hook the bar that connects to the column back up so you get the locking column, P/N switch and reverse lights functional again.
