Cooling Fan Switch

I have had a few fail as well, multiple brands. Manual override is necessary with some of the junk switches and controllers out there. I just bought the Flexalite adjustable controller with the push in probe and built in relay. Tested it, worked. Blew off the belts, fan didn't come one. Good part is it has a manual override switch. I am hooking up a toggle switch off that manual input to key on power. I can also get a replacement board, I will get it to carry along, just in case.

It doesn't make sense that these switches should fail after a year or so. There are many members here who probably still have the temp sender switch in their engines and working fine after all the years it's been in use. I have a bypass switch that I put in this spring so I have that backup, it just grounds the fans relays to trigger them, they go on with or without the key but I could wire the replays to a switched power lead.

I have been through sooo many thermal fan switches that it's ridiculous. My issue is that the on temp is too high or the off is too low. With all the money spent I could have bought a top of the line PWM switch from Dakota Digital. Remember, I live way south in New Orleans where it's almost 90* today in October.
But a couple options are the switch for a 1984 camaro. Or try this place www.hollisterroad.com/proddetail.php?prod=CFS185F
Good luck

thanks but I'm in Ontario Canada and up here we have little to choose from at high prices. I'm going to head to a GM dealer tomorrow and if that doesn't work out then I'll pick up another Hypertech switch and cross my fingers

Steve,

How is your setup wired? I would assume that it should be pretty simple since I don't recall that you had mentioned a controller. Does it look something like this:

Ground --- ThermalSwitch --- Relay --- SwitchedTwelveVolts (Ignition)

I have 2 fans so 2 relays, the relays are wired with constant power and the fan switch triggers the relay ground to power the fans. I have a wire tapped into the ground wire heading to the relay that goes to a switch on my dash that goes to a ground so I can turn the fans on at will. I also have another ground wire with a connector near the relays so if everything else fails I can connect the wire to the relay to turn on the fan

Dealer's part is discontinued and no switch that has the temp I wanted available so I got a Flex-a-lite adjustable for now.

your setup sounds straight forward and don't see any issues.. I'm guessing that maybe the aftermarket thermal switches available today must just have quality issues..

I'm surprised that there isn't an OEM thermal switch that meets your specs. An OEM switch would be durable as hell IMHO due to the fact that they last forever in today's cars..

it is a simple set up and to test it I just ground the wire that goes to the switch and the fans kick on. It's near the end of the season so I'll track down an OEM switch during the winter....

Isn't there a cool Taurus or Volvo fan relay controller? I read about it, but, my set up is with Dodge Intrepid fans and two relays for two speeds. I am in Oklahoma so it's plenty warm and humid. I have my low speed fans come on with a switch and high speed with the sending unit and an override switch just because. I like the fans to come on with the key for safety, I can hear em, once the car starts, not so much.

thanks but I have the two fans from a taurus that I wire for both of them to come on. All I am looking for is a fan switch with a single wire that closes anywhere from 200 to 210. But speaking about fan I am going to put my 16" perma cool fan back in now that I have a better rad. The perma cool fan draws alot less than the taurus fan, it's also much lighter and should do the the job.
