ok on my olds 350, there is a hose going from the water pump to the heater core, i bypassed the heater core and just put a spout on the back of the intake and routed the hose to it, my question is can i just eliminate the hose totally and block off the port on the water pump, would this cause any cooling issues?

You should be able to do that without any problems. When I had my engine on the test stand I just had a rubber cap with hose clamp on the heater hose outlet. Didn't notice any cooling problems just sitting there idling.
I know I've heard of guys doing this on plenty of cars without problems.

i would say if you live anywhere where theres any kinda cold weather (<35) heat is a good thing. it took me about 30 minutes to replace my heater core and blower fan. its not too hard and all you need is a few tools. defrost is your friend. unless ofcorse you live inna place where youd never have that weather or youd never drive it in bad weather. then go for it.
