Has anyone used one of these before; http://www.ecklerscorvette.com/corvette ... -1967.html

Was wondering if it would clear a front inlet style Qjet or for that matter, the later style Qjets. Exploring different air cleaner options right now and a drop base open element is something I'm considering but aren't going to drop any coin on something that ain't going to fit...

P.S. With my RPM intake and 1/2" carb spacer ( which I may be able to go bigger on depending on how much more clearance ), I'm assuming I shouldn't have any clearance issues with the HEI?

I have the air gap intake with a 1" spacer and a 2" drop base and it's close to the stock hood but there was still room for a 1/4 ring to lift the base so it would interfere with the throttle. It was tight with the HEI but you can position the wires so it will fit. I don't know if that corvette base will fit though

I have a hole cut in my hood and some of the inner bracing cut away, so hood clearance shouldn't be a problem. I'm more concerned with interferance with the choke ( electric ), fuel inlet, accel pump, vacuum ports, linkage etc. Also concerned with HEI clearance too.

Has anybody had any experience with one of these on a Qjet; http://www.ebay.com/itm/AllStar-Aluminu ... 2c6e2aad94

That should work and that ring in the picture lifts the base to clear the throttle. I have one with the same drop and no problems when using that ring. But if you have a hole in the hood why do you want a drop base cleaner?

For the option of running a taller air filter and bigger carb spacer if needed. I'm just looking for as much clearance as I can to keep my options open for future mods. I might even go big block which is taller still. On a more superficial note, with my already tall RPM intake and small spacer, I think it looks a bit 'off' with a non drop base air cleaner.

Yea my brother has used it. Works well. But cant comment about the Qjet fitting.

I liked it so much im getting my own. I was originally going to pick one with even more drop, but he told me its just a nightmare for throttle linkage clearance.

the fitment concerns are only with the linkage, and not the carb. The Holley's are the trickiest, as they have long bowls and a long throttle throw. If it works on a Holley, it should work even easier on a Q-jet.

the 1.5" drop base listed above works well. You can risk the 2" drop base, but when I spoke to the company that makes it, they could not confirm that it works with a Holley.

Also, in terms of filter heights... with a 1.5" drop base, you can use a 3" filter and end up with only 1.5" of height above your carb.
with a 2" drop base, you will have to use a 4" filter, and your final height will be 2" above the carb

you save more with the lesser drop base...

Going off on a minor tangent here, but wouldn't running a drop base ( especialy one with a big drop ) and having the filter so close to the top of the carb restrict air flow?

yes, it does immensely...
these drop bases have a very tall dome, like this

you can image, with the flat or regular air cleaner lid, the space between the dome of the base and the lid would be minimal. With the flat lid on mine, I can't even slip my fingers between that space.

I've heard a performance carb requires 3 to 4 inches of open space above to breath at it's full potential, a non-performance carb needs a little less.
my setup is barely 1" above the carb. It's manageable (with tuning) for regular putting around the city, but not so good at the track. I pick up a full 0.1 sec with open carb runs.
