Could bad alternator or belt cause rough idle or pinging?

Checked the belt and it's fine. I then had autozone check the alternator and they said it was fine. Bad gound? Autozone full of sh*t? Anyway I just drove out to Long Island this weekend which is about a 2 hour trip and my car pinged and bogged like crazy once warm and this is with 93 octane so I'm loosing it. Maybe it's the EGR but it makes me want to sell the car. My plugs are brand new. Thanks for the replies.

Read my post again regarding the alternator. Autozone tested my alternator and said it was fine; the machine is not always right and may not apply the same conditions as in your car.

Re: Could bad alternator or belt cause rough idle or pinging

The pinging could be the result of an EGR malfunction.
I doubt it is related to your charging system issue.

Re: Could bad alternator or belt cause rough idle or pinging

At this point I'm guessing the pinging and rough idle problem is either the egr, cap and rotor, or wires. My alternator also seems to be weak / starting to fail slowly.

Re: Could bad alternator or belt cause rough idle or pinging

Three item rule of thumb: gas/air/spark

Check/replace your fuel filter and air cleaner. If still a problem, check for any vacuum leaks (air), if not, then check/change your plug wires, and changing the cap and rotor is a good idea too -- it's cheap enough. Bad timing can also cause pinging.

Re: Could bad alternator or belt cause rough idle or pinging

As far as your charging problem, It's more than likely the alternator. But, just for sh*ts and giggles, are your battery cables original? Do they have bolt on terminals? I've seen that cause those same problems before. BTW, what car and engine are we talking about here?

Re: Could bad alternator or belt cause rough idle or pinging

That's some good advice. The timing has actually been set back to 18 rather than 20 and there are no vacuum leaks. Maybe it's just a matter of cap, rotor, wires, and egr valve. Air cleaner is good. Not sure about fuel filter. As far as the alternator goes, I agree that it sounds like its on its way out but I will check what kind of terminals it has.

Re: Could bad alternator or belt cause rough idle or pinging

Ok. Update. I did the cap, rotor and wires. Plugs are new and timing has been set back to 18 degrees. It's still pinging and bogging. Must be the egr system?

I posted this 3 weeks ago in your other thread;

"These engines are notorious for pinging when they are old with alot of miles on them. It's usually the EGR passages in the intake being clogged with hard carbon deposits and not the EGR valve itself. You need to remove the EGR valve and the carb and clean all the carbon deposits in the intake manifold passage, including those 2 stupid tubes ( which you should just remove and throw away ) under the carb which is where the EGR dumps it's exhaust out of."

Seems like you're looking into doing everything but the most likely cause. Check your EGR system. If that ain't it, THEN you can look into other causes, but start with the most obvious first; the EGR system.

Re: Could bad alternator or belt cause rough idle or pinging

Good point DoubleV.

Seafoam -- it's notorious for cleaning out hard carbon deposites from all internals (intake/heads). It costs about $13/can.

Ag88, let me know if you've heard of this stuff, there's youtube videos on how to seafoam a car correctly. It's worth a shot.

Re: Could bad alternator or belt cause rough idle or pinging

Do I have to remove the carb? Can't I just remove the valve and access the egr passages from there? Could it be the egr siloniod?454muscle, where can I purchase the seafoam? Thank you! Following your advice doublev.
