Crane energizer in a 327?

I'm kinda obsessive when I start reading on things... With that being said, I kinda see what you're saying about the spool. Unfortunatly a GN rear is out due to rarity and expense. And the guys down here in central FL want a small fortune for any g-body stock posi. So that leaves a spool, or the 98-02 f-body guts (3.42) with 28 splines from a 87/88 mcss. Don't see any other routes.

I ran an Auburn carrier and 373 gears with stock axles in my 83' Monte for years behind a 496 Big Block Chevy. It never really hooked so it never broke and when I bought my Moser 9" I sold the 7.5" for about what I had put into it.
On a spool when you make a turn the inside tire still rotates at the same speed as the outside tire so this will force the inside tire to spin in place on a sharp turn causing stress and tire wear and will affect handling on a gradual turn since one side will not unlock. I would not put a spool in a street car the initial low cost will end up costing you more money in the long run.

I have to agree with the others on cam & rear - but don't understand why your car is as you put it is - so slow. I wish you had something to compare it to such as 1/4 times. The 327 to the best of my knowledge was 210 HP w/ 2 barrel & 275 HP w/ 4barrel in its' stock form in 1968. Should be a nice package in your car.

I had that same cam in a '67 327, in an '81 Malibu years ago. I never got around to changing the gears and the car had 2.41's in it. The guy I got it from had rebuilt it and put a set of 76cc 882 heads on it. The result.....a mid range cam with not enough gear or compression and small valves. It would chirp 2nd gear if you wound it up and had nice top end, but that's it. It wouldn't even spin the tires!

Like everyone else said, those 3.73's will be fine. The 700-R4's low first gear will help too. 327's shine in their ability to rev so I'd build it to suit that. Low compression will really hurt a small displacement engine so keep that in mind since I didn't see what heads you have.

A set of old school "fuelie" or double hump heads would certainly help wake up the 327. With the right heads and cam, this engine would be a real cruiser. Again, what the 327 lacks in torque makes up in revs. I've ridden in quite a few 327 powered cars back in the day, and they were no slouches.

I'm sorry I haven't gone through the whole drivetrain.. 68' 327, has been rebuilt with stock guts. Has old school 202 double hump heads (stock, but gonna do roller rocker), rebuilt to stock TH350, open 3.73 mcss (looking into a auburn or yukon locker unit). I've fiddled with the timing, and the carb... Still will not even budge that tire at a wot from a stop. Also when it's cold I've got this god awful carb back fire... No matter where the throttle is.. When cold if I even mire than feather the throttle it pops and sputters. I know I have a bit to muddle through before it's fun... But any and all help is greatly appreciated. HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Ah, so it already has decent heads on it. What carb are you running presently? If it's a Q-jet, you could have a bad accelerator pump plunger..or as you said, when it's cold it pops and backfires. What type of choke are you using, and is it working properly?
If you can also hook up an inline fuel pressure gauge to rule out a weak fuel pump.
I figure I'd throw out a few things that come to mind.

The carb may eventually need to be gone over, but I would first optimize the ignition system and then go to the fuel delivery system.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Once again I don't know what you mean by so slow -That should be a 300 HP engine - I wouldn't think you would be to hold a wot brake torque. As Longroof is getting @ I think you have some other concerns going on.

There is definitely something going on. With that combo your car should be lots of fun. Sounds like you already know something isn't right. I think you have some work to do before considering a cam swap.

As for the carb, the best q jet builder is sean murphy at smi...best money i ever spent on a carb,,
timing is your next culprit,,get a timing tape,,from jegs,,summit,,initial at 12* total should be 36* all in by 2500 rpm,,
that will wake up your ride,,as for ignition ,, i run a junkyard accell hei i got for 40 bux with a msd module,,spun it way past 6 grand on spray,,never a issue,,

do all this before the cam swap,,good luck
