Crazy price rant!

Part of the price thing is the previously mentioned Barret Jackson syndrome, the rest is, here on Long Island anyways, supply. This is an active recycling area (4 shredders within 50 mile radius) and with your G body worth $450.00 (or more) across the scale, they are disappearing. Running engines here at the parts yards are $500. Remember too that first gen sbc's are now 25 years old. They are simply becoming scarce. Most yards here keep nothing over 10 years old. The other thing I feel that is driving the price, is what folks are willing to pay. 1500-2500 for running cars that will pass inspection is common. The only deals you find are from people, who are usually older and are not looking to "get top dollar". I would love to find a malibu to purchase locally for a "reasonable amount". What I find is ads like this : http://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/3565851572.html
That car is also listed on ebay right now. On my best day, that car is worth to me $1000.00. Then there is this gem: http://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/3439387165.html This car started out a year ago @ $7500.00 It is clean. No doubt. I might be going out on a limb, but I think that car , to the right person, is worth $2000.00. It isn't going to get better. And naturally, when I have something for sale, the "price cutters" are the only ones who call. I will recycle stuff before I sell it to those guys.

I think all of you guys make good points. For me, the main culprits are:

Barrett-Jackson / Car Restoration Shows: these folks have really distorted the hobby. I mean, when a Camaro goes for more money than a Duesenberg or a 1955 MB 300SL Gullwing, something's seriously wrong. This just makes someone say, well if they got $100K for that, I know mine's worth $$$; some paint, tune-up-in-a-can, set of tires...

Housing bubble: this just pushed everything up, if the $100K house is "worth" $300K then that car must be worth 10X what it really is worth

Collector vs. Classic vs. Old: just because the car is old doesn't make it a classic. Just because it's 20 ~ 25yrs old and you're able to get classic car insurance doesn't make it truly a classic. Collector is not for people who appreciate the car for what it is; it's only an object to hold onto until they can sell it for a ton. They're not enthusiasts, just looking to flip. Case in point, a multitude of B-J cars are just auctioned off over and over again.

The "There's a sucker born every minute / second" syndrome: self-explanatory

Location: Like Bonnewagon, in my areas (Chi-town & North-burbs of IL) it's the same thing and I'm sure he's heard this, "these cars rust all the time but mine's "clean" so to find a "clean" one you need to pay..." This has always led me to buy most of mine out of state. If it's northern part of Midwest, northeast it'll be more times than not it's over-priced. A decent pricepoint, rust-bucket.

Delusion: it's got a V8; it's a (plug in the model); it's got this rear-end in it; it's "rare"...the list goes on & on. Come across many CL, eBay, other automotive ads and sites with someone thinking their vehicle is super-rare or worth a ton when in fact it isn't. This ties into all of the above. Kicker is most of the time these people talk the car / components up like their gold & then when it's time for them to buy and they see the crazy prices they get mad at the seller. Now that's a WTF?

^^^Very well said. It doesnt stop at cars. Some of the engine parts prices I see on craigslist make me laugh. I seen a guy wanting $400 for a bare 454 block missing the caps that was sitting on a dirt shed floor :blam:

I seen a 1969 Buick GSX for $300 000 ........ Nuff said. Lets burn down Barret Jackson

Oh, didn't you know that's how you "season" a block. The dirt insulates it and the worms knaw at it keeping the oil passages clean...

show's like "American Pickers" doesn't help the whole price crap, on used/older stuff either.
Those guys are ridiculous. Too many shows on TV, showing people buy crap up, and sell it for profit.
Gives retards terrible ideas, and pollutes the market with overpriced garbage.

Probably worth it, since it'd be a 1 of none.

GSX was first introduced for the 1970 model year.

I've almost completely given up looking at cars on the Chicago CL for a few reasons. Rust being the main one, the fact that city driven cars take a beating, and the cost of living really drives the prices up. Primed rollers for $2K? Beat g-bodies going for $3k easily? They can sit on those cars til they rust apart before I budge.

There's a lady down the street from me trying to sell an '84 Cutlass for $3K. It has a smashed fender, damaged header panel, over 100K, hubcaps, dry rotted tires, vinyl top, 307, THM-200 trans and rust in the rockers. It's been sitting there for over a year and hasn't moved. By the time she realizes she wants too much, there's going to be so many things gone bad that it won't be worth $1K.
