dang shame at Pick-N-Pull

Damn, that's a shame. Why would someone take scrap iron price for a running car that was in good enough shape for someone to cut the whole floorpan out of?
If you ever sold anything on Craigslist that might be one of the reasons people rather sell to junk yards no bs and no safety issues.

I live in California I've seen plenty of nice cars and trucks in the yards. It's California where you have to smog your car if it's newer than 1975. Many cars are junked just on that basis. The local yards pay like 100-300 for most cars and trucks. They don't just base the price on scrap weight they also price it based on the popularity of the vehicle. Junk yards sell cars but will carry a salvage title. They don't sell everything although I have heard that if you want a car from the inside the yard you can buy but be prepared to pay for it. As others have mentioned once it gets processed to go in the yard they will get damaged from workers or forklifts or both.

It could also be under the state "Vehicle Retirement" program, if it flunked smog ($1000) and/or the owner was poor ($1500). This Pick-N-Pull is the only authorized yard in the area. In that case it would have to be dismantled, they would be prohibited by law from reselling it.

The junk yards here won't sell hole cars eather in fact most won't let you in the yard at all so you rely on some minimum wage Yahoo with no clue to maybe find your parts who can't tell a g-body from a mustang and thinks a 93 Civic with a fart can in the bumper is fast and that same half wit decides what gets crushed! I've scrapped a lot of junk over the years and the worst hurt was coming off the scale empty and the truck going on had a yellow 70ish gto on the bed the left fender and door were missing I could see it had a motor and transmission in it and a factory spoiler on the deck lid black interior buckets console pmd wheels and a black and orange judge strip on the left quarter by the time I parked and went in the office and asked it was crushed the woman at the counter said we don't save anything at these prices. At the time cars were pawing $16.00 per 100 Still makes me sick thinking about it on my next trip that day I seen it stacked on a trailer with 5 other cars headed for the shredder

Not all salvage yard workers are minimum wage yahoos who can't tell a Mustang from a G Body! Lol. I actually went back to work at the salvage yard I'd been at for 3 years. My boss will let customers in the yard but most of them don't have any business being there. Every now and then an actual car guy will come in looking for parts and I kind of enjoy helping those guys.

The boss buys most of the cars from insurance auctions. We hardly ever get anything very old. Mid 90's is usually the oldest. Every now and then we'll get something older. We got a 78 Cutlass in last year. The boss sold it whole to a co-worker.

People in general just don't care about old cars as much as they used to. It's a shame that so many cars that could be saved get crushed instead.

I have to say my Monte Carlo was picked up for junk. My friend Pete on L.I. does towing, when I went home he had my Monte, an 87 Aerocoupe and a 78-9 4 speed Monte in his yard. Anything worth saving (or running at Riverhead Raceway) does not get junked. But I understand if it's a state voucher.
One of these days when I get around to a build thread I'll tell the tale of how My Monte made it from a backyard on Long Island to Castle Rock CO after sitting under a carport for probably 10 years.

I know what you mean man. Lol. We've had a few guys that I'm pretty sure hadn't really been around cars very much at all. It's hard to work with somebody when they don't have a clue what you're talking about. The boss mistakenly hired a guy to do inventory once because he was really good with computers, which was a nice bonus since everything is computerized nowadays... Problem is he didn't know much of anything about cars. He didn't last long. Parts were getting inventoried wrong or not at all. Our original inventory guy is back now. He's been working on cars for about 30 years. He's one of the go-to guys for advice around there.

With the lack of interest in cars in general it may be hard to find good help at these yards nowadays. It probably won't get any better.

At my uncle's yard we hired well anyone that wondered in and showed up with a pulse lol never worked out I remember one guy wanted me to show him how to do everything! He quit when I told him to clean out a drainage ditch with a little garden shovel he asked me how? I then insulted him by asking if he ate stupid for lunch
