Just took off my alternator, was having charging issue. I am thinking I have the original alternator. Can someone help me date code it?
Car is 83 H/O built 12/82.
Also, connecter was slightly melted. Are these available?

You've got a Delco Remy part number 1105022, 78 amp 12V negative 12SI alternator. Reman number is 20250. Catalog number for a 9:00 o'clock regulator plug is 321-244.

Delco had an OLD way Delco used to do date codes. They used A-M (skipped the "I" however) to denote the month. They would have like 3L14 which would mean 1963 or maybe 1973, November 14th.

Because in the old coding , there would not be an "N". So the old system wouldn't work. However, your alternator was assembled November 9, 1982.

Starting in 1980, they started a NEW dating system on alternators. They used the numbers 1-9 for January through September. They used a letter code for October (O), November (N), and December (D). Followed by the 2 digit day date, and the single digit year code. So your N092 is November 9, 1982. This puts your alternator build date right in the possibility wheelhouse of it being the original to your car if your car was built in 12/82.

You can get one from Amazon if you still need to-

Delco PT2288 is what you need to replace that burnt plug. If that's for the regulator.

I bow to you on that decipher.
The charging issue I'm having is when I start it, it won't charge until I rev it up a good bit. Then it's good until I stop it. Then have to rev it next time I start it. What's my problem?
Thanks for the lead to a new connector.

Wire biters like fleming442 would know far more than I on this, but your alternator is acting like one of those one wire alternators that have to self-excite to flash the field. Meaning I believe your burnt plug isn't working right and exciting the alternator to start doing its thing right away.

Anyway, here's something from the Delco website that MIGHT be useful:

I too am I curious. I had a 94 amp 12SI 12SI reman that did the exact same thing from the get go. I think I over tightened the belt and took out the front bearing. Curious what the issue is, a bad voltage regulator?

I'm waiting for someone to chime in with an electrical background that knows WTF is going on with these electrical gizmos. Electrical generation isn't my strong suit.

But like you mention, I'm leaning toward something with the voltage regulator. Either it's the wiring burnt and/or the self-exciting the field thing going on, or something internal. I mean, it's acting just like one of those one-wire alternators. And it shouldn't. The one wire I got on my 71 442 does the exact same thing at first start, blip throttle and it starts charging, but I already knew that was likely.

There may be another issue, and although unlikely...is the guage seated properly in the dash? I don't think it would make much difference if it only works when you blip the throttle, but I've seen stranger things on these cars.

Do you have another alternator to try out and see if it acts any different?

Make sure you're getting 12v on the excite wire. It goes through the "charge" idiot light, so if the bulb blows, it can cause the alternator to go into "one wire" mode like 69hurstolds said. The plug being melted certainly doesn't help anything. You can get them at almost any parts store for ~$5.

PS: I only stumbled upon this. I normally don't do restoration stuff-passed the title several times.

I do not have another alternator hanging around to try. I'll phone a friend who might. My intent is to fix this one, and the connector.

The idiot light works.
I had to put one in my wife's car... :)

Question: Does the idiot light come on when you start and it's not charging? And if so, does it go off when you rev the engine and get it to start charging.
