If there is a trans problem it will manifest itself one way or another in time. If changing the fluid was so bad then I don't think GM would have recommended service intervals. I've never re-used trans fluid when installing shift kits or swapping transmissions and can't ever re-call having problems.

Heat and contamination are the biggest trans killers.

Your right about changing it according to the recommended service. The problems occur if the fluid hasn't been changed way over the recommended milage and new fluid will magnify the problems. Rereading the initial post he only has 86,000 on it so I retract my previous post and there should not be a problem if there isn't one now.

i was getting nervous reading this as i accidentaly forgot to keep the fluid out of the 2004r i just bought, it is clean though and 68,000 kms, going to throw a transgo kit and new converter and hope for the best

I would change that fluid in a heartbeat. Many transmission failures are caused by low pressure in the system which is caused by a dirty filter. The pump doesn't make enough pressure which can cause the clucthes to slip a little which causes wear and dirt that plugs the filter even more until the car is not drivable. Are these shops dropping the pan and replacing the the filter as well? I just did my 82 Grand Prix and refilled with Dexron 6. 3000 miles later and no problems and none expected.

No there isn't any problems with the trans,As stated the car has been well cared for.

I have heard that before as well but I don't subscribe to that theory. Make sure they use a good fluid, Dex 6 is backwards compatible synthetic approved to replace all other versions of Dexron. 27 year old fluid versus new technology. No Brainer for me.
