Do Grand Nationals get too much credit for the greatness of the G-Body?

I don't know what all the hype is all about but there were nothing special about them other than the engine thats it. I worked on these cars at the dealer back then and I can tell you they had problems when new. Yes it was faster than other G body's but not the most attractive one and especially the granny speedometer and the small led tach and boost gauge that you can barely see when it was sunny out thats just my opinion. Driven the GNX when new it was faster than the GN and i liked the way it launched from a dig but going over bumps it felt like you were in a dump truck because of its rear suspension but its more of a quarter mile car and deserves respect . My son asked my one day how come i didnt buy a 1987 GN, my answer i was happy with my 85 442 and they way it looked but if i needed more power for the street i took out my 71 super bee 440 six pack and had fun. GNX will always be top dog since it was a limited edition. CK80 is correct there were other cars that are faster, you could walk into a chevy dealer and order a 1987 callaway corvette RPO B2K

The engine is exactly what the hype was all about.

C4 Vette is a piss poor vehicle, regardless of modifications.

Put a turbo on any lump of an engine and it becomes a better performer. It is just common sense.

Yes, GM did it more than once over the years with varying degrees of success. They just got it more right than wrong with the Turbo Buicks, GNX, and TTA.

Otherwise it was just a really decent engine with lots of potential stuffed to a basic commuter car.

There was the Jetfire, turbo corvair... what else was there?

I’m a current cutlass owner. The first car I ever modified and hopped up was a cutlass I bought in high school. But there is just a little more appeal to a grand national, and actually all these years later if I dare say a regal has the better body lines. Just my opinion. But my parents went to buy a Monte SS in 1987 (I was 6) I told them to buy the black one. Lol. It was a grand national. But the only Monte carlos they had left were aero coups, and my dad was not buying one of them. So they went left of center and bought a 5th Avenue. My point is even as a 6 year old that didn’t know a spark plug from an oil plug the grand national stood out. Of course I’m a big fan of black. I do believe the gbody platform in general is one of the last greats from G. M. Full frame, rwd, all motor divisions involved.

i can speak for my 85 ha gn its crap and not one mechanic knows what they doing and from all the meet and greets ive attended and exchanged numbers with as soon as i mention its a hot aired turbo they all back out or say ima tell my friend he a hot air turbo guy and yet no one has made there majic work on my 85 im more happy with my 84 buick regal then my 85 grand national
