It appears to be a ground wire.

Thats a grounding strap homey...............

Yup! ground wire, it goes from the firewall to the engine block for ground...i forgot what type of ground tho..lol...they sell at at your local auto part store...like $2-5 bucks....i think its for light light or ground to the block componets...maybe some one will chime in..

Actually that goes to the top driver side monting bolt on the trans to engine? I had a 68 Camaro come in last summer not a ground any where except from the body to the rear sub frame. No idea why nothing was working LOL

That ground strap goes from the head to the firewall.
Replace it ASAP. It can cause all sorts of aggravating electrical problems if it's missing.

You can get those at any auto parts store. They sell them by length, fitting size and wire braid "gauge". Bring the old one in and match it up to a replacement. It's OK to use a heavier strap, but never substitute a narrower or thinner one.

You'll also want to know how and why the old one broke...or melted.
If it melted, you need to find out why it was carrying enough current to melt.

Or it could simply have broken from all those years of vibration when the engine was rocking under load.
A bad motor mount could allow the engine to move too far, snapping that strap.

I never knew that they had that much of an effect on the rest of the car :wtf:
