i've seen gaps between 3/16" and 1/4" it all depends how straight the car is. Most people try lining up the doors with the fender which is the wrong way to do it. Line the door up first with the 1/4 and set the height in front and back withe reference to the rocker panel. Then worry about the fender and window adjustments. The fender has a lot of adjustment in/out on both top and bottom where it mounts to the hood hinge and the bottom. Line the edges of the doors with a layer or two of tape (the orange or green painters tape works really well).
yah start with that, best is also to have the fender pulled off while setting the 1/4 gap on the rear and bottom of the door. Use come cardboard like shims to help out and protect the paint. Go a little at a time you have adjustment up/down forward and back on the body side of the hinge and you can rotate the door in / out and have a little bit of up / down adjustment on the door side of the hinge.
