well my 85 v6 cutlass Cali emission has seemed kind of sluggish, I checked out the egr valve and I could move it with out a problem but when the engine is fully warmed up or cold and I accelerate the engine the egr valve doesn't move at all. So I plugged it in directly to the carb and the egr valve opens whenever I accelerate it and closes when idling is this ok? or will it cause problems. It used to be plugged into a small looking canister that was on the passenger side valve cover and it didn't seem to hold vacuum.

The valve's opening is not directly dictated by engine vacuum in the normal system. The computer decides when to allow vacuum to be applied to it according to a set of parameters including load and temperature. As for it being sluggish, is this a new thing, or did you just get the car? In stock form it would be more surprising for it not to be sluggish. Mine in perfect working order did 0-60 in 22 seconds, with Federal emissions. If it is significantly slower than that ( do you lose drag races to Mercedes Benz 240D's? They are one of the few cars slower, with a 0-60 of 27 seconds) then you have a problem. Otherwise, it is just the normal misery of 2bbl V6 G body ownership. Remember: You have a 3200lb car with 110hp and 2.41 gears, not a recipe for driving fun. It is good for steady state highway driving though, and should return nearly 30mpg at 65mph. Top speed for mine was 78mph, flat out. (Note mine no longer has the V6, and can top 140 now)

I guess I'll hook it backup how it was. I have another question my engine seems to be running a little hotter then before it runs about 220 to 227 I'm wondering if its because I put a 350 rebuilt trans in and the transmission fluid is making it run hotter is there any other radiator I can stick in maybe from a v8 cutlass? I'm running a 180 degree thermostat. Also I broke a temperature sensor that was on top of the manifold it had two vacuum lines on it one went to the carb and the other went somewhere else, what function does this thing do? wow that's really good mpg I guess I'll keep the gutless 6 how many mpg in city? thanks.

is you car computer controlled?...if it's not then the egr is controlled by the vacuum....and I think tha temp sensor was a temp controlled vacuum line. It may be for your distributor advance or your egr or for something else depending on the emissions set up on your car. As for the egr it is supposed to be closed at idle and it opens when the rpms increase. If the egr is open at idle your car may stall and idle rough

Yea I think it is computer controlled because it was plugged into egr vacuum solenoid, I'm just going to plug it back how it was. What transmission modulator/ model of car or truck /year would fit my trans because mine is leaking, its a 350 trans with a lockup torque converter.

A V8 G body radiator will fit if you remove the block of plate used on the V6 cars, and get a longer top hose. Your car is computer controlled if it is a US spec car for 1985. As for city fuel economy, expect 14mpg. The gearing was optimized for highway fuel economy at the expense of everything else. I get better city fuel economy in the city with my 350 and more aggressive gearing than I did with the V6. Then again, my car was optimized for pizza delivery when I planned it.

I didn't realize that all 85's in the US were computerized..I had always thought it depended on the State laws....

As far as the op's question on the modulator I think all the 350 transmission's used the same modulator. Is the diaphragm leaking?

yep a lot of transmission fuild was being pulled right into engine, I went to the junkyard and pulled another one and put it in there, would that cause my engine to idle bad?

Well I did a compression test and one of my cylinders is at about 90psi after cranking for 5 seconds, the rest are around 120 psi. The engine also makes a marble in a tin can noise if I hit a certain rpm, what do guys think I should do?

For the cylinder that's low put a little oil down the spark plug port and retest it. If the compression raises then it's the rings and if it stays around 90 then it's a leaking valve.

the transmission fluid will cause a rough idle but on the good side it'll clean the top of the engine...
