yea thats right. one way to test it is to go boil some water and put it in they and c if it opens right

Additional tips... a bad radiator cap can cause overheating, you can remove the rad cap and run the engine to see if the problem persists -- you should be able to run the engine nice and cool with the cap of, even drive the car as long as you don't push the engine/rev high. Also are you using a fan shroud? Just a thought. If you don't use one then your rad fan won't do much to cool the coolant.
