Try this site for a Chevy :http://www.73-87.com/chevy_ids/sbcid2.htm

IIRC, the last 3 digits should be letters and will tell you the original application.

If it is not a Chevy, that site will be of no use to you.

The T seems to indicate that it was originally a truck or van engine. As far as TIF, it does not show up on that list. Try cleaning the pad really well and see if you might have misread it. That page also lists the casting numbers on it, and may give you another way of finding the OE application. Other than that, what can you tell us about the engine? Which side is the dipstick on? Does it have a breather stack on the intake, or is the oil fill on the valve cover? Does it have perimeter bolt or center bolt valve covers? Does it have the extra bolt hole on the end exhaust port where the manifold flange bolts up? Are the center 2 intake manifold bolt holes drilled at the same angle as the rest of them, or are they slightly steeper? How big is the harmonic balancer? What color is the engine (assuming original color)?

dip stick is on drivers side.. oil fill on the valve cover. perimeter bolts on valve covers. the engine color is blue. it was said to come out of an rv. i have not had this engine for very long and the person i got it from didnt seem to know much about it. he says its a 400SB but he was not too sure. there is another number printed under the serial number. 080142590

I would look at the casting number at the top of the block by the bellhousing flange behind the intake manifold. It's a bit hard to see, but you should be able to see it with a flashlight if it is in the car. I think the engine was made around 1978-1980 by the color and dipstick. If it is a 400, it will have a unique casting number because it used a different block in a few fundamental ways. If it has a boss for a 3rd freezeplug (drilled or not) it is a 400. All other SBC's have 2 freeze plugs and lack the boss for a 3rd. If it is a 400 it should be a 2 bolt block in those model years. It may also be a 305, 350, or (gasp!) 267. A 267 will make it's presence known by a total lack of power.

The closest to that TIF suffix code I can find is TLF. That would make the engine a 1978 Chevy 400 block, made in Flint, MI on June 13th. It is listed for "Van and Bus" (I guess that could include RV application) at 175 HP. Looks like all the 3 letter suffixes beginning with a T are 400's, so I'll guess that's what it is.

thanks for the help guys. so is it safe to say that this is a decent engine? it seems to have decent power. ( however it is completely stock). i got a edelbrock 600 cfm carb on it right now. im rebuilding a holley 3310 series 780 cfm double pump that i would like to put on it. other than that i was thinking maybe a performance cam and some good heads. it already has headers. anyone have any recomendations of what i should do to get a little more power out of it? (also i am running an automatic turbo 350 trans if that helps) Anyone know where i can get some ideas on positraction. you know, prices and all? thanks again.

I wouldn't run the Holley on a 400. Run a Quadrajet instead. Also, a 3310 is not a double pumper carb. It's a vacuum secondary model and most are rated at 750 cfm, not 780. Some early models were 780's, but they have different boosters than the newer ones made since the 70's. If it is a stock 400, it won't rev high enough to run the 780. All you will do is kill low end torque and throttle response. The Quadrajet may have the same CFM rating, but it has very small primaries which help it build more low speed torque. It also idles better because it has a stronger idle vacuum signature due to the smaller primaries.
