Hi i need help with my 1980 monte carlo. it has a 4.4liter v8 and lately ive been having a weird smell at idel. Im not driving it at the moment because i need a licence (im 16). ive been turning the car on, on week ends only for about 5-10 mins. the rest of the week i dont touch it. A week ago i turned it on and noticed a weird burning smell. After a few mins i noticed some white smoking coming from under the hood. When i opened it up i notice that there was smoke coming from the filter cover. i turned off as soon as i can and ever since then every time i turned it on it started to smell funny with no smoke. need help asp.

Other info: the car to my belief is all original with over 700,000 miles on it

700K? Wow. Plan to replace some parts. White smoke from inside the air filter? Or valve breather? Make sure there are no critter nests inside the air filter.

Is it possibly the heater control valve leaking coolant onto your exhaust manifold? That would explain the smoke and smell. Follow you heater lines from the water pump up to the firewall and you should see a black or silver valve in line.

i have followed a line to the heater core and after a couple of mins one of the lines gets super hot

i have clean all the criter sh*t in the engine bay a long time age n havnt anything since then

Does the white smoke smell 'burnt' or 'sweet'? Trying to help you isolate the cause. Sorry I don't have a scratch'n'sniff card to send you for a reference.

Check the valve covers for leaks. If oil drips on a hot exhaust manifold, it will make a lot of smoke.
