Hi All!

I recently bought an 81 Malibu Wagon, and I am very excited :D

It has the 229 V6, and computer controlled carb.

When I bought the car you could smell and see some smoke, I think from leaking valve cover gaskets. I went ahead and replaced the gaskets, and the seem to be fine. But now, I notice the smell of exhaust (rather than burning oil) in the cabin, even while driving.

My first thought is that the header gaskets could be a little leaky??

What could be causing this?

Thanks!

I don't know how old the exhaust is but you could have rot holes in the pipe in some areas. Check the donut gaskets on your manifolds too. If you have holes in your floor boards that could also be why the smell is strong too and coming through to the cabin area.

The best thing is to get underneath and inspect all pieces.
