I have a 1980 Caballero. The gauges are aggravating. Mine work sometimes and sometimes not so good. There is a printed circuit board for the gauges. Each gauge has a "touch"connection; not a hard connection. The gauge cluster can be removed to expose the circuit board. In addition to the other suggestions, the gauge may not be making good contact with the board. I had a sending unit go bad in the tank of my 1980 Grand LeMans but I don't recall the indicator position of the gauge. If you discover the sending unit is bad, be careful when you drain the tank. Use a bonding wire between your tank and the receiving container. Also, it's a good idea to use a wire between the receiving container and the ground. I investigated vehicle fires caused by the build-up of static electricity during the fuel transfer.
