i removed the valve covers and some rockers were loose - went through sequence again and retightened - still no go so i checked rockers again and there were some loose again - removed pushrods and i think two of them have very slight bends in them - could i have damaged anything else (i.e. heads, pistons lifters etc?) it sounded smooth turning i over and wasn't turned over very much - i believe you guy's were right and the timing chain gear(s) are off 180 deg - hopefully i can swap those and she'll fire up - i just don't want to damage anything else

Distributor is probably off not the timing chain. If you lined up the dots when installing the cam then you should be good to go.

after you prime your engine you can adjust your valves so that your engine will run as long as you need to get your cam broke in with out all the noise and oil all over your motor during start up....all you have to do is put engine on TDC NUMBER ONE !!!!!! adjuet the following valves!!!1 3 4 8 exhaust valves....1 2 5 7 intake valves..... rotate engine one revolution until you reach 0 this is TDC SIX adjust2 5 6 7exhaust valves 3 4 6 8 intake valves ...... you adjust the valve to zero lash by turning the push rod with your fingers until the rod stops turning this is zero add one half turn and go to the next valve until all valves have been adjusted ....install your covers. after you run in your engine an adjust timing and idle you can go back and readjust your valves by removing one valve cover at a time start up your motor an lossen one rocker at a time until you hear it ticking tighten it until it stops ticking go to the next valves on this side after you do all valves on this side stop engine an tighten all valves one quarter turn put cover on and do samething on other side 😀

on my last post i gave you the best way to adjust your valves before start up ... if i was you i would recheck your cam timing before i did anything else. you can save your self a lot of heart ache and money i know this from experience 😢 good luck!!!!

do not start the engine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you did what i did. the rockers are loose because the hydraulic lifters have collapsed from no oil pressure. when you tightened the valve lash and the lifters pumped back up when they got oil, it bent the pushrods. replace the pushrods and reset the valve lash, lightly.
then set the engine to TDC using a piston stop. make sure that the intake valve opens and closes before the piston reaches the top. if so your cam timing is close enough.

megaladon6 is right !!!!! i would pull your timing cover off and check your cam timing if your timing is off it would cause some serious problems think broken piston and broken or bent valves !! you don't have to ask me how i know this.... thats one 105.00 piston and 8 new intake valves later i found my cam timing off jest enough to let it run badly 😢 i found out the hard way that anyone can make a mistake!!!! if anyone tells you that they don't make mistakes they're lying to you.... good luck

for the short time it turned over it got oil pressure so would i still need to prime it or would the cylinders that didnt get gas not get oil also

you don't need to worry about priming anymore. the fact that it got oil pressure is what bent the pushrods. after the pushrods are fixed and you check the cam and ignition timing, you can just start it up. at most, pull the coil wire and crank the engine till the gauge shows pressure.

I Had the same problem with my 350 I had the distibuter 180 degrees off pull the dist. pull the number 1 plug if you don't have pressure gauge stick your finger over the plug hole and have someone turn the engine over until the pressure build up and it pops your finger out of the hole drop the dist. back in aiming at the number one plug it may not drop all the way in tap the ingition dont turn it over some after market dist have the number 2 and 7 plugs switched. check to make sure witch one you have. Then recheck the firing order and it should start up.
