My son and his family took a trip out east and a friend of his and his family went for the trip in their Rav4.
My daughter-in-laws F150 is a fully loaded XLT sport with a 5.0. The Rav4 was the 2016 4 cylinder edition. The F150 was loaded with stuff and 4 bikes on the bike rack. My son was shocked at the gas mileage the F150 was making compared to the Rav4. The Rav4 had to fill up twice for every time the F150 needed fuel. The capacity of the Rav4 tank is 16 gallons and the F150 is 35 gallons so the difference between the 2 the F150 took only 3 more gallons than the Rav4 to do the same distance. For the extra weight the F150 can carry, the extra room for the kids in the back seat and up front, the power of the 5 .0 over a 4 cylinder and the comfort I was surprised the gas mileage was that close.

I think alot of factors can go into the MPG of each and driving style and speed can cause 2 to 3 mpg variations on the same vehicle from my experience.

But with that being said i have a Nissan Frontier with a 4.0L v6 and i have to drive conservatively to break 20 mpg. I have been looking at new 1/2 ton pick ups and typically the mileage with a v8 is better than what my truck is rated for.. If the truck wasn't paid off and low mileage and i needed more truck then i would definitely get a new 1/2 ton gasser.

I find that a little difficult to believe because the Toy is rated around 20% better consumption than a 4x4 V8 ford. You need to compare gas receipts against the distance covered.

the F150 runs in 2w mode until needed in the winter. It's not an exact test but I am surprised it was close to what the Rav4 got.

Torque.

Same reason 455s and big inch Caddies got 20mpg while 3.8s didn't do much better.

My wife's Toyota Venza is a 4cyl AWD like the Rav4 (slightly bigger engine) and only averages around 27-28 in most road trips. The exception seems to be when you slow it done to 60-65mph following a Uhaul. Then it gets mid 30s. Probably does better than the F150 around town my a good margin though.

I had a Cadillac Seville with a v8. In town best I could do was 22 mpg. On a long highway trip I could get 28 mpg. That engine just ran at a vary low RPM when in overdrive. Less RPMs than the V6 in my father's Impala and better gas mileage. I have found that an v8 with the right gearing does better on highway and worse everywhere else.

my son and his wife live out in the country so they don't do much city driving with the F150. My son in in sales so he goes to the city quite often but he drives an 2015 Infinity Q50S so that's not bad on gas. My other son in Toronto drives a 2017 Ford Focus RS and his wife has a 2017 Volkswagen Passast so they have good vehicles for the city driving. They all ask me if my GP kills me on gas but when I mention I have no car payments they shut up.

I just thought about another issue that may have affected the fuel mileage on the Rav4. The Rav4 was loaded down with the mom and dad and their 2 kids plus all their luggage so that extra weight may have had more effect on the rated fuel mileage than the effect of the weight in the F150 on their fuel mileage.

I have a friend who claims the same. His '15 F150 gets better highway mileage than his '13 Sportage ever did. City is a push but highway it apparently shines.

I think with the addition of everything having 6+ speed autos, direct fuel injection, cylinder deactivation and modern ECM's that have a much greater resolution and the ability to adjust fueling and timing so much more effectively they can squeeze great steady state mileage out of just about everything. Transient is still another thing though
