I just installed a new aeromotive s/s fuel pump on my car. I hooked everything up correctly with a relay kit I purchased. My questions are does it matter if the pump is mounted vertically or horizontally on the car, and how hot is a pump suppose to get. I checked mine with a ir thermometer and it showed 101. Is that to hot? Any help is greatly appreciated as I don't want to ruin a new pump.

I need some help guys. The relay for my fuel pump is getting pretty warm and so is my pump. I rechecked my wiring against the diagram provided with the relay kit and checked all connections. Is this common or do I have an issue? Please help got a cruise coming up this weekend and I don't want to miss it because of this problem.

The pump needs to be mounted upright so the fuel lines are parallel with the ground.
The pump also has to be mounted below either the modified stock gas tank or a trunk mounted fuel cell which ever one you are using so it can have constant fuel from being gravity feed. I would run a minimum of 8 AN fuel line to the regulator at the front of the engine for a 140+ gph pump'
Is your regulator a deadhead or bypass style?
Do you have any fittings in your fuel system coming from the pump that are greater than 45 degrees or non AN style fittings? (hardware store brass etc)
What amp relay are you using?
If you can post some pictures of your set up and wiring.
I am not sure how hot these pumps actually run but I will have my car out Tomorrow and see how hot my big Paxton 300 gets.

It's a deadhead regulator. I also have some brass fitting which are the barbed end fittings for connection of fuel house and no nothing greater than 45degrees. I'm running a 30 amp relay. I would post some pictures but I can not get them to load from phone.

I forgot to mention my tank is stock. Ive known several people running like that with no issue for years.

Are you running a sump on your tank and if not what size is your fuel line going to the fuel pump?
How far away is the pump from the tank?
And is your pump mounted correctly and lower than the stock tank?
At this point I feel you might have line restrictions causing the pump to work harder and run hotter.
What is the part number if your pump?

Aei-11203 out of summit. No I'm not running a sump tank. My pump is mounted directly in front of my tank and my lines going into the pump are about 6in from being flush with the bottom of the tank. The pump is also mounted vertically which would make my lines parallel to the car as you stated in post. All my hard lines are factory which I believe to be 5/16 I.d. Maybe be wrong on the size.

I believe you are correct that the factory line size is 5/16" ID, the pump you have list 6 AN or 8 AN for recommended fuel line sizes and they also recommend all AN fittings.
6 AN is 3/8" ID and 8 AN is 1/2" so you are already restricting the pump with factory lines.
What kind of pumps are the friends you have that are running a similar set up to you without any issues?

Several are running Holley blacks and a couple use the blue. I just got rid of a blue because it went out. I can do away with the factory hard tubing but how could I get around the hard line that goes into the tank? Would it be best to get rid of my stock tank and get a fuel cell?

It depends on your application and preference as to running a fuel cell or not, a serious street/strip car you might benefit from running a cell with safety foam but for a street car you can put a sump in a stock tank that will work fine and will be better set up to run an external electric fuel pump plus the cell takes up a lot of trunk space.
If you install a sump or fuel cell I would go with 8 AN line that is what I am running on my Mallory 140 that supplies fuel for the nitrous, my primary pump is a Paxton 300 which has a 12 AN feed line and a 10 AN all the way to the 4 port regulator and then I have 8 AN lines going to the Quickfuel 1150.
Here is my trunk set up with a 20 gallon fuel cell:
