Turns out it is the MSD Streetfire HEI distributor causing the issue. I spoke to MSD tech support they said I need to put an ignition box on to support higher rpm use. They told me that the distributor I bought will start dropping spark as early as 4000rpm.

Yeah, with a name like 'streetfire' you would think it could actually work in a streetcar application but instead it starts struggling at only 4k? Funny how that lameness isn't mentioned anywhere in their advertisements. Instead, you buy one thinking it's a decent product only to find out you need to buy even more MSD parts to make their 'streetfire' perform as good as a junkyard HEI....

I should have taken the money I spent on this part and just bought a better one on the first place.

I'd be getting my money back on that fine piece of chinese crap and look at either a DUI distributor or an MSD e-curve (made in USA)

Unfortunately it's too late now I bought it in 2010 and the warranty was only for a year.

I don't look at it as a warranty issue. You were told by MSD that you should expect the ignition to break up over 4000 rpm. They sell it as a replacement HEI and the SBC has a red line of 6000 but their adds don't tell you that....as far as adding a box I'd change the module instead for a good quality one and that should help

I have a Mallory Hyfire 6A on order, looking at the instructions you take out the module and replace it with a wire harness so the box takes over that function.

You are correct sir. All yer gonna have under the cap is the pick up coil and the rotor button.
