Just an update on my situation. I picked up another new fuel pump from a different supplier, and installed it on the Malibu today. The car started and ran fine, with no more flooding like I had with the previous fuel pump.
I've got a question about the electric choke. The choke wasn't working, so I went through the 1980 GM Malibu service manual that I have here. The connector for the electric choke thermostat was broken when I got the car, and its corroded as well. I've been holding the connector onto the carb with either electrical tape or tie straps. I've ordered a new connector, which I'm picking up tomorrow. When I first checked for voltage at that connector, it showed 0 volts. I went through the schematic in the manual, and discovered that the fuse for the electric choke heater was missing in the fuse panel. I installed a fuse, and now I have about 5-5.5 volts at the connector. Is that the correct voltage? Should it be more or less than that? I've read the description of operation in the manual, and it doesn't mention what voltage there should be at that connector with the engine running. it says that it shouldn't take more than 3.5 minutes for the choke to go from fully closed when cold, to fully open when its warmed up. Just wondering if anyone here knows. Thanks again.
