Roadside or better on-road repairs are a common thing around desert racers. We once changed the transmission on a Land Rover Defender in the waiting row to board the ferry from Genova in Italy to Tunis in Tunisia. Finished on-time when the row started to go aboard. The co-pilot of the second car in our team wired a huge part of the rallye computer and sat-nav stuff on the way to Italy while hanging up-side-down Mork-from-Ork-style in the passenger seat.
