The main reason the midwest doesn't use fuel oil, is that propane is cheaper and plentiful because of all the oil drilling. I just bought 200 gallons at $1.29/gal and would have bought more, but when summer fill happens in July or August, it will cost about $0.80/gal.Heating oil, which is pretty much red dyed diesel is the main source of heating in the northeast. Strangely it isn't widely used for heating outside the northeast, even in areas that are colder.
In comparison, Red Dye diesel is usually stable at $1.50/gal or so with it being slightly more expensive in spring and fall.
