I recently put a chevy 350 in my olds cutlass, I hooked up all the wires to the motor, distributor wires, temp sensor, etc. My guages all read wrong, the rpms gauge when the car is idling is at like 2000 rpms, the temp gauge don't work and the battery gauge says 8volts but I checked the battery and it was at 14. Does anyone know why my gauges are off? I took the computer out and all the computer wires, I was thinking that's y it is so off. If anyone could help me that would be great. Thanks

You could start debugging the issue by checking your grounding system. Disconnect the battery and check the ground from the battery connection to the gauge cluster. An ohm meter can be used for this.

What gauges are you using? the ones from your cutlass? If that's the case you might need a gauge that's compatible with your sending unit. Find out the correct ohm rating that the sending units need to be and buy the right one (or just buy new gauges with the senders)

The tach is a different issue, is it hooked up on the distributor?

The tach gauge is hooked up 2 the distributor from the original wires that were in the car, the gauge cluster is the original one from the car. The cutlass used 2 have a v6 in it. The only gauges that read right are the fuel gauge and the speedometer. I'm stumped. The cluster worked before I took the car apart, so they should still be good. Any help or inpute would be greatly appreseated, thanks

Did you use the sending units that were with your original v6? Or were the senders already on your 350 and you just hooked up wires?

Also most tachs are set up for the amount of cylinders. If you have one calibrated for a v6, you would need one which works on a v8

It's very clear there's a problem with the sending units and you have a v6 tach. Your gauges work and those problems aren't associated with your speedo (regulated by transmission) and your gas tank (original i'm guessing)

The sending unit for the water temp. Is the original one from the v6, I'm guessing I have 2 change the tach, and the battery voltage is the original one from the car. I didn't touch the fuel gauge sending unit and the speedometer is hooked up 2 a muncie 4 speed. Is there anyway I can get new gauges in the original cluster housing. Iv never taken one of these out so idk what's involved in it but is it possible 2 replace the ones already existing in there and put them in the original spot.

I think there is a little 'switch' or clip on the back of the tach with positions for 6 and 8 cylinder input. Switch yours to 8.

Looks like your tach can be fixed easily, thats good. Well you can just buy a kit from summit for 15$
http://www.summitracing.com/search/Depa ... ord=gauges
that includes a new water temp gauge and oil pressure gauge plus senders, it'd probably be less work and cheaper than finding the correct sending units for the swap. The voltmeter is what confuses me, it should be reading right if you have it hooked up correctly. And if that's the case, then yes it could be the computer

Another idea is to buy a new set of sending units, here's one for 18$, http://www.genesisautoparts.com/product ... XSU160.htm I would buy this at your local parts store. Then if there's no change after installing it, take them back and move on to the next idea.

Which would be to find the specs on the oldsmobile sending units and buy them in sbc 350 form. But that's more work than it's worth. 15$ for two gauges sounds pretty good to me... (you really don't neeed a voltmeter, when your battery goes, it goes)

Alright thanks guys your a great help. Ill take a look at everything and mess around. Does anyone know how the gauge cluster comes out so I can hit the switch on the back of the tach? If the water temp. Don't work when I get a new sending unit I will jus buy an oil preesure gauge and a water temp gauge. Thanks again
