Gear setup 8.5 "

Phew, that's good. When setting up the gear pattern, leave the carrier preload at zero - there is no need to beat the poop out of your shims repeatedly. And I would not preload the carrier bearings more than .004-.005" on a GM Bolt. (.010" is alot)

your first set up is the best your going to get and there is nothing wrong with it. The normal pinion shim is .0034 to .0037 and your backlash should be between .0006 and .00010. As for preload on the carrier gears you can't get too much pre-load. When you are checking backlash you should check 4 or 5 different teeth to make sure the gears are identical. If you find any discrepancies you will need to check each crown gear to make sure they all fall within specs. If your set up is off you will not break gears like someone suggested, your differential will make noise. You should have got a paper with patterns which would have told you your first set up was good.

0.004-0.005 total and not on each side from zero?

Correct.

pontiacgp - I think you're off by a decimal point or two on your backlash numbers.

OP - pontiacgp is spot on with that you should check your pattern in 3-4 locations around the ring gear - I had forgot to mention that and I also forgot mention that you should check your ring gear run out as well to confirm that it is .003" or less. If your ring gear runout is excessive it will wreak havoc trying to get the pattern and back lash set correctly. Usually the gear manufacturer supplies a recommended backlash setting - they are all not the same. .006-.010" is safe and I always err on the high side.

to me looks like a 5 cut gear which has a .006 to .010 backlash. The 2 cut gear has a .003 to .006
