Ok guys in new here so don't bash me too bad. I have a 79 Malibu. Very mild 350(for now). Built th350( haven't ordered converter yet but thinking 3200 stall) 28"tire(275/60). I'm wanting opinions on the rear gears. It will hardly if ever see the highway. Just some town cruising and maybe an 1/8th or two just for fun(probably on the street). Gas mileage is not a concern. Also when the motor gets done I know I will have to change the gears so that's not a concern either. So what would everyone suggest to have a fun red light to red light round town cruiser. Thanks in advance and don't be too hard on me if this sounds stupid.

Do you know the duration of the cam at .050 and the lift numbers.
What does the rest of the build consist of such as compression, heads, intake style, carb size etc.?
I am assuming full length headers and duals?
For a mild application I would think 2500 at max for stall depending on the build.
3200 is definitely for a more aggressive build.
Gears depend on the overall combo you could probably live with 373 but more streetable 342 or 323 if you ever want to venture on the highway

No one is going to bash you on here...well maybe. Lol

If I where you I'd go with a 3.73 or 4.11. I had a 200c with some 3.73out back. It would wind up pretty high @ 60mph. Around 3500-4000. That's with a 307. If I where you I'd go with 4.11. With a taller tire and a first gear of 2.52, some 4.11's will pick it up quickly. Just as fun decelerating as accelerating. You really hear the engine load back when letting off the gas pedal with low gears like that.

Problem is I don't know much about the motor at all. I know it a very mild cam not stock, edelbrock oldchool aluminum intake and edelbrock 750 4bbl. Full headers true duals. Although it might sound crazy I'm trying to base everything around the 585hp 383 that will go into it eventually. That's what raises my question. What should I use for now. I know I'll replace gears but hoping not to replace torque converter. Thanks again.

3.42, especially for cruising w/a 3spd trans

I guess it depends on when eventually is for the 383 and if you really want to drive around with a converter and gear that is mismatched for your current combo.
Take it from many members on here future plans especially when costly don't always happen.

Very true. So what would u think for my current set up for some good get up n go? I guess gears and a converter would be to big a deal when the new motor goes in

My thoughts are with 585 Hp you want more than a 7.5 rear so no sence in throwing money at what you have. Secondly a 750 cfm carb is too big for a mild 350. It's all about the complete combo - Carb, intake, cam, heads, converter, rear, cid, compression. The more info you have on your present combo the better advice you can get to meet your goal.

Well it's a 9" rear. And I took the carb to a guy and he says he got it to run like a 600-650. Honestly I don't know what he did. Not big on the internals of a carb. It's just an rpm performer and what killin me is I don't know anything about the cam accept I was told it was "a step up from stock". The heads are stock I assume. The motor is from a 71 z28. Dont know if that makes a difference or not.
