If the current mild engine runs good you can sell it as a running engine when the 383 is ready to drop in.
Good point. This is a life long dream project so I wanna do it right. I'm doing trans, rear and suspension to handle just about anything(for a street car). Then later comes motor. That's down the line but that has an impact on what I do now. Like u guys said, the motor changes it allIf the current mild engine runs good you can sell it as a running engine when the 383 is ready to drop in.
You just gave me a lot more information - if you have a 71 Z-28 it's 270 HP. It probably has 3973487 heads being a Z-28 it should have 2.02 valves but they opened the combustion chamber to (75 cc - 9/1 comp). The good thing it's a great short block - steel crank w/ flat top pistons.
I run this short block in my car (stock w/ stock bore) and north of 450 HP. If you want more info I'll be happy to tell you. In your present condition your probably good for 5000 rpm. If your setting up for 1/4 mi a 4.11 would be my choice

also I'm aiming for an 1/8 mile street car. Thanks for ur help guys.O ok then. I was told the code ran back to a 71z28 or nova ss I believe. I'll have to make sure next time I look at that code
I have a th350 with 28" tire and 3.42 gears. I will be going to 4.10s this winter. I am cruising on the highway at 2500rpm at 55-60mph. Adding 400rpm to that on the highway is not that big a deal. Also, if you have a decent cam and like to go with a 3000 stall, you will make less transmission heat with a steeper gear.
