Getting the F' Outta Dodge.

And now we see why I created this thread and moved to snowier pastures.
Unfortunately that alone will never completely get us out of own way.

Brilliant!

My new favourite hobby is slagging Ontario to everyone I meet. Steeling the resolve against it.

Honey Badger? or Wolverine??

And, for myself, I'd have the premises decades ago for the sunny climes of the Turks and Caicos only some pin brained no mind of a political hack that happened to be a less than prime minister at the time screwed up the whole idea of having them join the confederation by turning the idea down. I'm still waiting for someone to dig 'im up and make soup out of his bones.

Never understood the desire to annex Turk and Caicos. Not like it's particularly difficult to travel there.

Do we really want to annex a place that has a GDP less than half of our worst performing province, an economy almost entirely dependent on tourism and a history of corruption worse than a Montreal construction company?

Just not sure what practical purpose it serves.

Thing about that is, we did not approach them, they came to us. The Turks et al actually wanted to join Canada. as our newest provinces.

What'd they get out of it? Better education, more and better job opportunities, and an escape from an economy that was almost totally dependent on tourism. Also membership in a country that didn't have hurricanes as it's national method of urban renewal.

What'd we got out of it? People willing to work and eager to learn and grow and prosper, An instant winter destination for the snowbirds that still belonged to us and kept the vacation and winter capital spent on travel still in Canada and of benefit to Canadian suppliers and vendors. A full time destination and location with real estate and space that could be developed and marketed, A strategically located geographic position on the equator with unoccupied islands big enough to construct launch facilities for our Com-Sats that would remove our dependence on the charity of others to get our satellites in space. And just how much of Venezuela's oil is under the country and how much is out under the adjacent sea?

So what happens is an exchange of residents; them moving up here and us migrating down there. Sure the place was under developed and lacked infrastructure that we take for granted. So we bring that with us and all those superannuated retirees, with all their knowledge and expertise, get to play in the sun and keep on designing and building and generally just givin' 'er. Stuffing concrete with rebar is something we up here do as a matter of course, so some semi-retired architect gets to build a re-enforced resort that is highly hurricane resistant and people get to watch the carnage through bullet proof glass.

Me? i'd been down there on the next flight and looking to buy land as an investment. Check in with the local Ministry of Economic Development or whatever its name would have been back then and do some research on what products and items were best sellers and what could be brought in to fill the holes. Basically, find a niche market, find a product that the residents of that niche want, or demand, or like, and sell it to them; make money. Hell, set up a desalination plant and produce fresh water. We all drink the stuff and even use it for ice. Wonder how much ice the hotels and resorts down there use per hour?? Everyone knows tourists are barbarians who will even put ice in their Scotch.
