If all youre doing is swapping in the posi then its pretty easy.
Since youre going to reuse the gearset that is in there, you should measure the backlash with a dial indicator BEFORE you disassemble. Hold the pinion still and rock the ring gear back and forth and record the movement on the indicator.
Remove the old carrier and ring gear, swap the ring gear onto the posi carrier.
Install the posi carrier and ring gear and shim the carrier right or left as needed to measure the original backlash reading.
This sets the ring gear in the same position it has been running against the pinion for years. If it was silent before, it will be silent again if its put in the right place. The original shims might get you close, but then again they might not so you need to measure.
For new gearsets, just to give you a point of reference, recommended backlash is on the order of .008" - .010" for street use.
