That Takata recall was huge. Did GM think it could hide?!? Or they "didn't know?".

If you have a Takata equipped recall, I'd highly recommend getting it replaced.

Here's some back story as I understand it that may answer some questions. No trade secrets being divulged, it's all on the internet if you go looking. Some of the damage and injury photos are concerning.

Takata supplied millions and millions of inflators for something like 35 different manufacturers. Depending on supply chain and inventory at the manufacturer level, it's possible that other vendors (TRW, Autoliv, Daicel, etc.) were mixed in as well. It's very common to have a driver's side inflator made by one vendor and a passenger side by another in the same vehicle.
Early on, when there were first problems with Takata inflators, some manufacturers issued recalls and replaced the problematic inflators with "improved" Takata parts. Later on, when the injuries really stacked up, NHTSA mandated that ALL Takata inflators be taken out of service and replaced. Some manufacturers got on it quickly, some took their time. It's entirely possible that your vehicle has been affected by several recalls because of the parts revisions and the time-line.

The physical problem with the Takata part is that there was a manufacturing defect that allowed moisture intrusion over time through the vent holes. If you live in a humid climate or near the coast it's a bigger problem. The propellant inside is Ammonium Nitrate (see OKC bombing) and as manufactured in its solid form looks like dozens of Aspirin tablets. The solid pellets result in a slow, controlled burn and the gas escapes through the vent holes, inflating the airbag. But the moisture intrusion breaks the solid pellets into a powder. The powder has a much faster burn rate and the gases can't escape the holes fast enough. This causes the metal canister to rupture and shrapnel can injure or kill.

GM should do a recall on the crappy plastic dashes that came in those trucks. My wifes 2010 Yukon has 46K on the clock and the dash is cracked in two places and looks like crap. The one in front of the cluster vibrates when you cruise down the highway. Dealer wouldnt do a thing to replace it.

Chevy/GMC dashes are prone to cracking in those years. Sucky suck suck.

Also the Takata air bag thing has been out for quite some time now for 07-14 trucks equipped with such. I was put on a waiting list whenever they got around to getting a replacement part that wasn't Takata. But guess what? That was over 3 years ago and they never contacted me ever again. I don't worry about it now since I got rid of the truck in May.

Can't agree with you more, got one!! I've heard of numerous people with this problem. If they would get together we might have a voice

The dash in my 08 Sierra is cracked in like five different places. I keep a sunshade in the windshield almost all the time. I don't know how you can take better care of the dash. Back in 2011 there was a "GM Cares" program where they would replace your dash for $500 (supposedly half price) but I didn't bother because they were replacing the broken dash with the same defective design. A friend of ours had a Suburban from that era with a broken dash. Had it replaced. He picked up the inevitable squeaks and rattles from the trauma of having the entire dash pulled out and replaced. Then a few months later, the replacement dash cracked.

I just decided to stay with the devil I know. It isn't getting any better though. There have been a few times where I've found small chunks of black plastic, sometimes with a shiny yellow-cad plated clip attached, laying in the floor board. Just fell off from under there somewhere. Awful quality. Another reason my 08 is the newest GM product you'll ever see me own.

I can't say that I've ever been contacted regarding the air bag recall. I'll have to look into that. It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn I've slipped through the cracks.

GM sent a letter saying my truck was included in the recall. BUT, they didn't have the correct part in stock.

So basically, we got your back, we're on it, and when we get the part available, your local GMC dealer will contact you to schedule you for this FREE service of replacing the defective air bags. Never heard anything again about it. Hopefully the new owner would.
