i found an 87 grand national rear end. guy wants $850 for it, is that a good price? has 45k miles on it. also will i need to do any mods to the drive shaft in my 86 cutlass, or can i just drop the 7.5 and bolt in the 8.5

That's about what they go for. Does it have Posi?

Unless you can get the driveshaft out of the GN too, you'll have to have yours shortened 1 inch.

posi, 3.42. how involved is shortening the dive shaft? i have a friend who is a prof mechanic that can help me if need be.

never mind just googled it, looks easy enough think i'll have my body guy help he's the best welder i know.
thanx 4 feedbk

Take it to a drivetrain shop and have them cut and balance it.
Around here we've got a place called Proven Force that does stuff like that. You'll have to look into what's in your area.
I had my driveshaft shortened and balanced for $90.

thanks for the advice wouldn't wanna start shootin shrapnel everywhere if it broke. 😀

If you're serious at all about racing it, now would be a good time to install a driveshaft safety loop.

That's a good price for that rear end. They go for $1200 to $1500 in my area. I lucked out and got mine for 600 with 3:73's in it and por-15 treated.
