GNX Story from 1987

Thanks for posting.

I think the Jim Wangers on the video was the Pontiac GTO godfather as they called him?

It is always great to look at all these old videos when talking heads try to guess the future. I remember in the late 70's when the news said that all our cars would be 4 cyl 4 doors getting 30 mpg in a few years where gas was going to cost $10 a gallon because of the middle east and we would only be allowed a certain amount of gas a month. Yup, that sure did happen! lol

That is one good thing about the Internet is being able to find those old car videos, commercials, road tests, etc that I myself have not seen in 30 plus years. Brings back memories.

Wagners is a dolt. Buick had Corvette on the ropes with the standard turbo Regals and GNs; the GNX was a knock out punch. It was a technology showcase - much of which was developed in sportscar racing. The fact that it translated so effectively to the lump of a V6 in the GNX (and lesser models) speaks volumes for how far ahead of the curve Buick was in 1987. The Turbo TA was equally impressive - so I suppose ol' Jim got his wish afterall.

PS. Having had owned both heavily modified Turbo Buick and turbo Dodge - yeah, in no way was the Dodge the better car.

Some GN owners are beyond hard core. The last 30 minutes or so are about the GNX. I have delusions that my G8 will some day be worth more than I paid for it.

I agree, that Jim guy was delusional. Probably just butthurt that Buick is whopping on the rest of GM and not conforming to their "old man image".

By 1987, the Buick turbo V6 had been around for 9 years, and the technology finally caught up to the expectations. The TPI FI system was still only two years old and had some bugs that still needed working out. The 3.8 L was still being used in FWD GM cars 12 (?) years later.

Wanger's idea on how to promote a car was to drop a 421 into the 64 GTO and buffalo the press into believing it was the standard 389 the car would be produced with.

Basically Wangers is admitting GTO's were marketing hype sold to sheep. If you love GTO's, no offence, but if you dig deep, you have to admit there is truth there.

Plus I could never figure out why he, Wangers, dropped a big block Pontiac motor into a Monte Carlo when the regular Grand Prix or 2+2 was available at the time? I do not know the story behind it but I just found it wacky on what the "Ponte Carlo" was trying to prove when I saw stories about the car in magazines at that time?
