Gotta posi Q?

Im new to rear wheel drive cars. My 87 monte ss has a 7.5 open rear n i like to convert it to posi. Do i just get a 7.5 posi carrier n swap it out or there's more to it? Thanks for Any help!!
 
do you know what kinda gears u want to put into the rear? that will help out too :mrgreen:

373.. It's not going to be a track car or anything like that. I just want to have that option.

What transmission u got, 373 need an overdrive transmission or will suck on freeway!! Rpms will be screaming!!!

I would go with a 3 series eaton cone unit. Forget the idea of a mini spool on the street if ya do quite a bit of driving. It will chatter the tires on every turn. Then the rear axl bearings walk out of the housing. Happened to me on my LeMans.

That's about it and its not as big of a job as most think. You'll need a dial indicator with a magnetic base to do the job right. Both are available at Harbour Freight. You can find good used posi carriers at your local U pick yard.

x2, if you install the the backlash shims the same way they came out you might not need to make any backlash adjustments the posi carrier. Don't forget the bolts for the crown gear are LH thread
 
putting a posi in mine was easy I checked the backlash before i pulled it out, I already had the 3.73s, put the new yukon carrier in checked it, took the shims and swapped them from one side to the other and she was set perfect again, to date one of the easiest things done to my car.
