Grandpa Car: 1979 Cutlass Thread

No rubbing so far. Only put maybe 10 miles on them so far though.

It's been 2 1/2 weeks since I placed the order and got confirmation for my new center caps. They haven't shown up yet. On top of that, they aren't responding to emails plus their toll free number has a busy signal and their direct line just hangs up. I'm wondering if I should start getting nervous.

I've been follow this tread for a 2 years and love it .just hearing the history and time put in to a beautiful car keep going .keep us updated

Thanks. I'm hoping to put a lot more miles on it this year than I did last year. Seemed like all I did was screw with transmission stuff. I can't believe how nice it drives now with new tires and a straight (unbent) axle. There is a dead spot in the steering box right at center that I need to try to adjust out. It wasn't noticeable before because the old front tires gave it a constant slight pull to the right.

Your car is very nice! I don't often like the spoke style rims but on your car they look terrific! You did very subtle nice upgrades, and I love the story behind it. Sorry about your grandfather, but good for you to keep his memory alive!

Driven, where did you get those rims :?: What size are they :?: Want to get a set for my Gbody :!:
What are they called :?: Keep us updated on rubbing isue's.
Gbarrie.

I'm with you guys, I think they look "just right" on a '70s/'80s car. I've never really liked the style before but somehow it works on these cars.

Gbarrie, These are Appliance Wiremags. 14X7 and 14X8. I got them off Craigslist for $100(?) then paid another $20 for the center caps. I don't think they've been made since the early '80s so you'll just have to keep an eye out. I just missed a set of 15x7 and 15X8 Appliance Diamags that I really liked. The only time I have heard it rub was backing out of a driveway with the wheels at full left lock. The width isn't really an issue, it's the offset. I never actually measured them but it looks like the additional width is mainly on the outside. That's great for clearance at the control arms and rear frame rails along with looking good but puts them pretty close to the fender lip. I still have stock springs and I don't think I could get away with lowering it with this combo.

New, larger diameter steering wheel on order. Probably be here Tuesday or Wednesday. Summit is crazy fast like that. Ordered different center caps too. They are coming out of Michigan. Hopefully I'll get them before the weekend.
There's a car show in the Cutlass' home town 250 miles away on June 1st so I need to tie up some loose ends. They have a "1970-1990 Original or Restored" class. Always plenty of Corvette guys in that category. Think I'd fit in to that one? The other closest class is "1960-1980s Modified or Custom". Lots more competition there. Input?
