Guesstimation of Worth

That's nothing. There was a guy a while back that said he had been passing an '84 H/O that was for sale on his way to work for a few weeks.

It needed paint, the wing tips were missing on the spoiler along with quite a few other odds and ends.

He finally called and asked what they were asking....$18,000!!!!!! For a car that's maybe worth $3500-$4000 on a good day.

You can thank berret jackson for that. Now anybody with a car that barley registers as classic will ask for an arm, leg, and first born because they think everybody else is a sucka. To make matters worse, half of these people talk out of there *ss, and have no ****ing clue what the rust bucket they're trying to sell is actually worth.

I think it's people like that, that are kind've killing the "hot-rod" nature of american muscle cars, and replacing it with more of a "commercial" muscle car. I could give a **** what my car is actually worth, but when its all said and done, and the car that cost upwards of 70,000 runs two seconds slower, and pulls a slower pass than my homebrew Monster monte I'm happy.

Remember the GN is in new era net ratings. 355 foot pounds of torque is respectable as was the 13.90s ETs.

The reason that the 83 H/O didnt come with an 8.5 rear is because they didnt make them yet.

84 is when the first 8.5 rears were made. And they were specifically built for the GN's. Since Buick designed them, Olds "borrowed" it for the 84 H/O and the 85-87 442's as part of the performance package, even though they didnt need them.

The only strange part about it all is that the MonteSS never had the 8.5 as an option for any year 84-87.

the monte SS did come with a 7.625 carrier with 28 spline axles, the same the GN used

Yes, as far as the 28 spline axles, but the axles arent what break in a 7.5 rear. Its the spider gears 99% of the time, which in the 8.5 carrier you dont have that issue. So yeah, it had 28 spline axles in the MonteSs, but so what? It didnt help it any.

Im just saying it was strange that the 8.5 rear wasnt a standard part used in the Monte SS. Kind of a shame, as there would be more Gbody 8.5's out there if they did. 😀

what spider gears are you talking about...I have seem a few guys strip the splines off the 26 spline axles or drop the c-clip but I don't recall any problems the pinion or side gears..I have blown the pinion gears in a 7.5 auburn posi but those pinion gears are substantially smaller than the pinions in an open carrier..

I'm sure they are the same ones, that I break too. The spider or side gears. Always the first to go in every 7.5 i've broke.

is that an open or a posi?.....the ones at the track of course has the pinion and side gears welded so that would shift most of the pressure onto the pinion shaft and axles, we were not permitted to run a spool..the main cause of the splines shredding is idiot who spun into the infield grass would hammer the gas getting back onto the tack and the one wheel hitting pavement would tear up the splines on the axle

Im not talking drag racing. I am talking about hammering a car on the street, as I used to do. lol

My buddy and I over the course of a few years went through many many 7.5 rears, posi and open. Good times.

Regardless, the whole point of the conversation was why the 83 H/O didnt have a 8.5 rear in it. Answer was they didnt make them yet. 😀
