do you HAVE to have GM numbers matching components, or is an aftermarket equivalent OK?

I guess a better question is what has to be changed if I put the 85"- 5A heads on a 86"+ engine?

the heads and the intake.. ditch the piece of sh*t A5 intake..make that a newspaper weight.. and grab an alumium A4 or e-brock performer.. intake.. even the old iron 350 intakes will work great but they are a bit on the portly side

and for what its worth..starting in 85 (vin y engines only) they had roller cams and 6A(candian) or 7A heads... while the Vin 9s still had 5A and flat tappet cams 85" model year only tho.

Basically I don't care too much about whether or not the parts are GM or not, but I do have to retain all the emissions equipment. I wouldn't want a radical cam or anything because I drive the car daily and I want to retain the good fuel mileage it has, or improve it. I'm not sure what aftermarket cam would be applicable for what I want either, so it would probably have to be something similar to what was in the H.O. engines from the factory. I looked up how much the camshaft is in the list I have posted at GMPartsHouse.com, and it was $142.80, it also lists it as a 84'-85'. I wonder what the H.O. roller camshaft part number is?

Also, what makes the aluminum intakes better than the regular ones other than weight? I imagine it flows better, but where would the performance increase be felt at (off the line, mid-range, or top-end)?

if you look at their websites most cam manufactures offer "stock type" or "towing"cams. they'll usually have a C.A.R.B. number which means that they're emissions legal. (one note, with a flat tappet cam you MUST also replace the lifters, with a roller it's recommended but not absolutely necessary) basically you'll want the smallest cam they make, but even an extra 5-10*duration will wake things up, if you combine that with better heads and you start making the motor fun.well, as fun as an olds 307 could be.

an aluminum intake fom a quality company (edelbrock, GM performance, etc) will shed heat better, be lighter, and usually have a better design and higher quality/tolerances in the runners. they probably won't help the really low end, but they will help mid-high end power. since olds engines are known for their low end you don't need too much help there.

Ok, that helps out a lot. I'll have to gather up information and prices for either way I could go.

Everyone has already mentioned what I would suggest, which is definately toss the 7A heads for a set of earlier 307 5A heads. Something that I did not see is that you will also need to get a correct set of exhaust manifolds to match the 5A heads because the 7A heads used a log style tube manifold while the 5A headed cars used a cast iron exhaust manifold similar to all of the earlier olds engines from the 70s. The Edelbrock Performer intake will work fine with the 5A heads but isnt really said to have much better flow than a stock aluminum intake. Mondello and Dick Miller Racing both offer a great selection of Olds engine parts, I wouldnt waste time or money on an OE Vin 9 442 roller cam when you can get a much nicer aftermarket cam from the two vendors mentioned above. I cannot vouge for Dick Miller but the camshafts that Mondello uses are from Engle Racing and they work great and they also have some mild grinds that are a step up from stock and will work fine for what you want to do. You will definately need a better valve spring than stock. The older NON roller engines and the roller cammed 7A headed Vin Y heads have weaker springs than the roller cammed 86-87 Vin 9 HO engines did and if you dont upgrade them you will run into valve float around 4500 rpm and wont make use of the better flowing heads. Mondello sells bettef valve springs also. Their website is mondellotwister.com and I havent looked at the stuff on their site in a long while but they do sell the Olds engine Tech manual and a very detailed catalog. The Tech Manual is also, or was, available through GM Performance Parts and has a great wealth of information on Olds engines.

Dude.. avoid Mondello like the plague.. while Mr. Mondello is a respectable man.. his company has gone to sh*t.. all the parts sold are mostly relabeled over priced knock-offs. Hell some of his "engle" cams are engle grinds on a generic cam blank.. same price for a cheaply made part.. ive heard nothing but bad things about the company since Lynn his son in law if im not mistaken took over.

I have never had problems with them but like I mentioned it has been a few years. I talked with Lynn a few times but that was probably about 6 years ago and since I heard Joe Mondello himself really didnt have much activity with the business anymore as was mentioned at the Mondello Nats at Byron Dragway 5 or so years back and he is into Fords of all things now lol. I had a friend that started using Dick Miller for parts and support due to the things you mentioned above about Mondello and he was happy with the support and he would even talk with you on the phone personally and was a really nice guy that would give you help not just sell you stuff you dont need. We werent real crazy about the cam choices from them and a few local guys used them and slowed down over the Engle cams that Mondello sold. I have been out of the Olds game since around 03-04 timeframe, just suggesting what I knew worked good at the time and prior to but Im sure there are better options these days
