my timing light doesnt have any adjustments on it. hook it up to the battery and #1 spark plug and pull the trigger...

If the 8th digit of your VIN number is a 9 then you have a 'high output' 307 which means you have an 87 442 car or a swapped H/O/442 VIN plate. The 9 engine was never offered in non H/O's/442's.

A Chevy looks nothing like an Olds motor. Just look at the distributor. Does it go into the block ( Olds ) or does it go through the intake manifold ( Chevy ). That'll tell you right there.

Open your trunk and there should be a sticker there with a bunch of letters/number codes. Theses are your option codes. If it has a W42 ( I think that's what it is, I'll check ), then it's an 87 442 ( or a deck lid from an H/O/442).

im 100% its a 9. when i bought it in saskatchewan and brought it back to manitoba we registered a to b plates for it from his insurance company and they gave me the old insurance papers for it. wouldnt it have said on there if it was a 442 or even if it had a h/o v8? everything inside is just like a regular one as well, no fancy 442 decels or anything, jus a gage package. ill post a few more pics to my gallery an have a look and tell me what you think. id love to find out i have a h/o or a 442 for that matter lol i do have a h/o but i call her my girlfriend

There is definitely something strange going on. Look at your engine again and tell us FOR SURE if it's a Chevy or an Olds ( Olds has an oil filler tube sticking straight up on the front passenger side of the block ).

Put your VIN number into this decoder and tell us what comes up; http://apps.oldsgmail.com/vin.asp

:worthless:

all my pics are in my album. ill try and get a good one of the motor in the light sometime today.

this is what came up from that vin de-coder. huh now that i look it isnt 9 its H but im sure the mechanic made a stink because it had the 9 code and he couldnt figure out what motor it was. either way ill snap a pic and double check the vin on the dash.

i still sure the mechanic put my vin in and it came back that the engine code was 9...does that make any sense? all the pics are in my "the cuttys" album. theres definately no oil tube, its just a cap on the valve cover.

Yep, just as I suspected, just a normal Canadian 305 equiped Cutlass! You might want to go back and edit your post where you said "im 100% its a 9".

No! The 8th digit of your VIN number is 'H'. H means Chevy 305 which makes sense because you're in Canada.

OK, so now you know for sure you have a Chevy 305, now can you tell us if it's running on the CCC system or not? I think by 87, even the Canadian cars were all running them. Now open up your trunk and look at the sticker underneath it with a bunch of letter/number codes on it. Is 'LG4' one of those codes? If so, I'm pretty sure that model 305 ( slug! ) had the base timing set at a whopping 0.

P.S. I'm assuming your emmissions decal on your radiator shroud is missing?
