I sold my brother my 83 Bonneville, but I'm trying to help him fix a problem.

He was driving home from work one night and in the process of switching the brights on and off the thing in the stalk that clicks to turn them off must've broke. Because it's stuck on brights and won't come off. Then last night on our way home from work the lights wouldn't turn on with the dimmer pulled unless you pulled the stalk towards the steering wheel. So he spent the whole 40 min drive home holding the stalk. Then when we got back he let go and the lights stayed on.

I'm just curious what the best course of action is to correct this. Not having brights is no biggie, He's fine with dims. I'm just not sure how to fix this, or track down exactly what the problem is.

sounds like to me you need to replace the switch. something is broke in it.

for a temporary fix the high beam wire is the green one so if you pull that wire from the socket and tape it the lows will just be on. For the two high beam lights just pull the sockets off

For the wire is that in the switch in the steering column? or are you talking about the wires hooked up to the headlights?

thank you guys. One last question, how involved is the process to opening the column to replace the switch? Im just not sure how to get it apart :?

the switch is on the column, drop the column and you'll find it on the left side opposite from the ignition switch. You don't take the column apart to replace it. There are 2 7mm bolts and a Philips head screw holding it in place.
