Depending on what type of cam you're running, the engine is probably lugging with those gears. 3.73's with a 200-4R would be perfect. Like you said, it would give you the best of both worlds...a little snappier off the line and an overdrive gear for cruising.
I'm sure having the TH350 with lock-up also helped cut down your cruising rpm.
