I have a 83 Hurst Olds with 307 HO. Problem after I run it for awhile enough to get it hot let it set at a show for a couple of hours and very hard to start. Chugs, coughs ,spits sputters and the like. Carb has been rebuilt 2 times by 2 different professionals. All parts inside distubitor are new wires and plugs are also ne. When it starts iy always smells like gas and acts like a have a very wild cam.

if your car is still stock there is a vacuum operated purge valve that goes bad and it will suck gas out of the fuel bowl when it goes bad if you check it there should be no liquid fuel in it.

If it's not the choke, it might be fuel boiling out of the carb. What happens is, you turn off the engine and the heat from under the carb 'gurgles' the fuel out and it's now sitting in your intake ( not to mention none in your fuel bowl ). When you try to restart it, it's extremely rich and therefore difficult to start. Sometimes a phenolic resin carb spacer will help keep the carb cooler so that won't happen. Todays fuels aren't very carb friendly, though some have zero problems, so go figure.

Next time when trying to start the car in a situation where you know it's going to give you fits, slowley push down the gas pedal to the floor and hold it there. This will open the choke ( if it's closed ) and open the throttle. This introduces air into the intake. Crank the engine over while you keep the pedal floored. It may start much easier for you that way.

Thanks for the replies. Yes its still stock under the hood except for air conditioning compressor. Any other idea's?

Try flooring it to start. It could be leaking well plugs in the carburetor.

how did you determine it wasn't the choke?...and what about the prospect of the fuel boiling like DoubleV mentioned
