Hey guys I'm looking for the trim tag for my Gutless and possibly the build sheet. Trying to figure out the gear ratio of this rear end.

not real sure on cutlasses but both 79 malibus i had when you take the gas tank out its above the gas tank.also my friend found his build sheet under the back seat under the insulation on his 78 malibu. good luck. the trim tag is under the hood right in front of the windshield drivers side held on by two sheet metal screws.

if you don't know what ratio you have then it's probably time the rear end oil is changed and then you can check the numbers on the gears

Cool thanks guys, I know where the trim tag was on the firewall I guess what I am looking for was like an option tag. They are white and have a series of three digit codes like F41 for the suspention so on and so on. I know on the old 68-72 GM pickups there on the glove box door with a series of codes and there options. heres a pic of an option tag. I may be barking up the wrong tree on this but I could have sworn I've seen them in G-bodys before...

Bad news is GM didn't start putting the option sticker on the trunk lid of gbodys till 1984 so you have to hope to find your build sheet somewhere in the car. It is commonly found under the rear seat or carpet. Good luck.

The build sheet may or may not be in the car, It might be compared to the notes for a short order cook in a diner, its purpose is to inform the assembly line workers which trims etc to put in the car. It may be left in the car, typically under a seat as the seats are one of the last things to be put in the car. However it might also have been put in the trash, it's pot luck if it was left in the car. Lets hope you get lucky!.

I found my build sheet under the passenger seat. Between the seat cushion and the seat frame.

Some plants actually instructed the line workers to make sure that the build sheet did not end up in the vehicle, though I forget which plants

Could be behind the door panel, under the carpet, under the rear seat... or not in the vehicle at all.
I wouldn't start tearing the car apart to find it unless you have good reason to.
The best thing to do is to request it from the GM Heritage department, it will cost you $50 but it will tell you a bunch of other information that this sheet won't such as dealer and original owner in some cases as well as sometimes production numbers.

Yeah it'll soon be a part anyway due to the T-tops leaking when she sat outside recently in all the heavy rain. Plus I'm cleaning all the faded interior goodies and dying them all back to factory med. Briar brown so I'll know more about it in weeks to come. But the GM heritage deal sounds cool I may have this done on both my Malibu and Cutlass. Thanks!
