Help me run 13-13.5 1/4 with $2,000

First off, I want to thank everyone who took the time to reply. I can tell that most advice here is geared towards people who are willing to get off their a$$es and do the work.

As someone stated, my goal is to get that time with the least amount of money and labor as possible. I don't want to have to add any power adders (nitrous, superchargers, etc...). I wanted to stay with SBC, but I was open to BBC or even LS, which seems to require me doing a lot of ripping and running.

My mechanic is basically saying $2,700 to get me near 400hp at the flywheel, everything included. I was being cheap and just really coming to you guys to make sure there weren't better options for someone not doing their own work. I have $2,100 right now and as I get closer to the quoted price, I wanted to make sure I was making the right decision. I'm willing to put more with it, up to, let's say $4k. My mechanic isn't a LS fan, as far as trying to do it cheaply, but I know some local guys who will backyard swap it in a heartbeat...I just don't trust them. I know my mechanic, he's vouched for by other mechanics, and he races consistently at the track. Had I not been trying to go 120 mph on a th350 on the freeway, my car probably would be running just fine now. In his own right, my mechanic is still another backyard mechanic, he's just held in higher regard from the people I know with "fast" cars.

Shops....as in speed shops and engine build shops...are out of the question. The ones I know of around here, YIKES, $2,000 would barely get you a tune-up.

I was in denial. I see guys here and on the net running 12 second cars for $3k or so, but it's because they are gear monkeys. They rolled up their sleeves, got some junkyard stuff, etc... so just like anything else, you have to pay to play unless you're willing to work.

Thanks.

CAR - Monte Carlo SS. 4,100 lb (est. with me and audio equipment), th350, Edelbrok 2101 intake, Holly 4150 carb, 373 gears, flowmaster w/ true duals

REASON - Blew my engine, looking to get it back on the road

LABOR - I will NOT be doing any labor myself. NONE.

GOAL Is it reasonable in Michigan, WITH LABOR, to get achieve a 13-13.5 1/4 time with $2,000? I'm happy with the speed of cars such as a 2007 Mustang GT, 2007 Dodge Magnum SRT8, etc... in their stock form, so my goal for now is to be a tad bit quicker than that.

In case you're wondering what happened to my last engine?

Not sure if this will fit your budget but getting ready to pull the 406 out of my 85 SS. Gonna sell most everything except the intake, carb, Distributor, and a few pulleys.11to 1 compression, rpm performer heads, solid lifters,1.5 roller rockers,555 lift cam, hooker headers, Starting with a new 400 block and want to do alot of upgrades. Can hear the motor run til the weather breaks and out it comes. I live in Livonia. Looking to get 2500.00 for everything.

I believe in the displacement theorem. My 3600 lb wagon was flogged into mid-14s with a 9.5:1 406, 600 cfm Edelbrock, 3.73s and an Auburn posi. Other than that, it was stock (though only 10 years old at the time...) I didn't know much at the time, but the choice to go large on the first try turned out to be a good one. I did have the stock crank and rods treated to ARP bolts and a rotating assembly balance - also because I was flinging forged pistons. I got 80000 miles out of the that motor.

If you plan on driving this car regularly on the street, stay below 10:1. With my old 406, I could run 87 octane, then put 92 and dial the timing up a little.
