Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

"The timing has already been retarded to 18 " Try going down to 8* BTDC as a test. I'll bet the pinging ends but performance will suffer. Does this car have a computer? What year? The computer will try to advance the timing so if the retarded timing works, the real fix is the EGR.

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

Another thing i seen was a build up of carbon in the combustion chamber makin it smaller hence more compression with low octane fuel will cause a ping! Try decarbonizing the engine with seafoam. Usually a faulty EGR that causes pining u will only notice in the hot temps of summer.

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

Could it just be basic tune-up stuff like plugs, wires, rotor, cap, ect? Tackling the EGR valve tomorrow. Has a slight misfire too. Again I have a new carb and intake manifold gasket. Runs much better but not 100%.

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

I'd take it to my mechanic. by your description, it could be a number of things mentioned previously. Yes, it could be something a tune up would fix, but could be something worse, I wouldn't start replacing stuff (unless the car needs it) until I knew what exactly is causing the problem. Good luck!

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

Well mechanic thanks we should do EGR valve and gasket, plugs, and wires at this point. But who knows. It pings after it gets warm and idles a little rough. I can feel a obvious misfire in gear.

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

the first thing you do is a good tune-up...if your running plugs from who knows when and have half-*ss wires and cap and rotor, who knows whats wrong. im no pro by any means but first thing first is get the basics covered. sometimes after a simple process of elimination, you can find a shitty wire that was causing all the problems. without knowing what shape your ignition system is in, worrying about the rest is senseless!! its just my opinion but before i pissed around with the egr,(or anything else for that matter) id do minimum cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. and seafoam!! i once sniffed it and i could run faster...no sh*t...

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

I agree with you. I just changed the plugs this morning and the misfire went away. It's already running much better. What a difference. Maybe I'll wait till spring to work out the kinks and smooth it out further. It's not missing anymore but still runs a little rougher than it should with some engine shake and vibration.

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

check out the cap and rotor, if theres build up on either one it'll cause it to run rough. ive cleaned em before cuz i was tight on cash but you really should just replace em if they're in rough shape. also make sure no wires are touching anything or eachother. you can use some insulated wire to wrap around one then give it a few twists to add some space and repeat...its kinda ghetto but it works. that or just buy the proper little tabs that hold them apart.

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

Problem solved! Car runs like new now. I just changed the spark plugs and wires and now my headache is over. Gonna wait till spring for the EGR. The cap and rotor seem ok but I'll also get into it when it gets a little warmer out. It's been like 15 degrees here in NY. I'm very happy it's smooth as hell with no more misfire. Just drove the car for about 30 minutes with no pinging so my fingers are crossed. So far it drives like it should with not shaking at idle. Thanks for the help!
