Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

did you take the temp after you have driven it for an extended period of time?

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

try seafoam, it works!! disconnect and plug your egr if you think its that and see what it does. your engine should operate the same no matter how long you drive it. maybe you have shitty spark plugs?? corrosion can cause pre-ignition...what size motor is it???

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

I just had this happen to me. My thermostat wasn't opening at all. Check to see if the top radiator hose has pressure when at operating temp if not then your thermostat is not opening. If it does then i would check the egr it can do this to.

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

Thanks guys. Its an olds 307 with 105k miles. Yes I drove the car about 40 minutes before checking the temp. I will check the EGR and change thermostat perhaps. Whats the deal with this seafoam stuff I've been hearing about?

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

it cleans out carbon from your engine. ive done it on 5 vehicles already and everyone especially my 84 cutty ran better. ive put other "fuel system cleaners" in and nothing has done what seafoam has. i recently bought a 95 accent saftied for $400 cuz it ran like sh*t and needed a rear shock, and with a minor tune up and some seafoam i bet i can bag that car for atleast 2 years no problems. i ran my 307 breifly with no egr and an open rad hose, if all else fails disconnect anything you dont need and start from scratch.

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

You can't just disconnect an EGR without retarding your timing too. A lot more advance is dialed in because of the diluted mixture. Check the timing specs for EGR and pre-EGR motors and you will see what I mean. That is why a motor detonates when the EGR is malfunctioning, it's all that timing advance. Older model EGR's you could put manifold vacuum to the valve at idle and it would open, causing the motor to run rough and even stall. More modern valves had exhaust back-pressure transducer valves inside that only worked with sufficient exhaust flow. If you could reach under the valve and force it open (without burning your fingers) that will test it. Otherwise the only way to know is to replace it with a known good valve.

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

I'll take your word on that...

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

bonnewagon is right, the egr recirculates gases into the combustion chamber and that acts to cool down the chamber so you can run more advanced..remove the egr the temp goes up in the chamber and you get pre-detonation until you back off the timing

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

Thanks! Yeah so far I tried both lucas engine cleaner, STP fuel cleaner, and 93 octane fuel. It's gotten better but the problem is not solved. It's pinging less and it seems like it takes longer for it to start pinging. The EGR valve might be the culprit at this point as it's running pretty damn good otherwise. I will get the valve check asap and keep you posted. I'm at a loss otherwise.

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

what shape are your wires in?...if the wires are bad that could be causing a crossfire
