Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

Ok so the car runs smooth as glass with no misfires but still pings intermittently once warmed up. What else could this be? Tried 93 octane and it helped a little but not 100%. It just seems to do it less frequently and less intensely. Again, the timing has been retarded to 18 degrees, it has new plugs, new intake manifold gasket and carb. Could this just be the EGR or catalytic coverter? What about cap and rotor? Almost there!

Re: Help needed with possible pinging and detonation issue!!

Did you retard the timing way down as what has been suggested just to see if it goes away or not?

These engines are notorious for pinging when they are old with alot of miles on them. It's usually the EGR passages in the intake being clogged with hard carbon deposits and not the EGR valve itself. You need to remove the EGR valve and the carb and clean all the carbon deposits in the intake manifold passage, including those 2 stupid tubes ( which you should just remove and throw away ) under the carb which is where the EGR dumps it's exhaust out of.

Sounds pretty easy maybe I'll try to clean out the passages myself. Could it be the cat too?
