maybe she just had a case of the vapors? lock that is? *shrug*

Would that cause the engine to die while idling ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vapor_lock

A vapor lock is more likely to develop when the vehicle is in traffic because the under-hood temperature tends to rise. A vapor lock can also develop when the engine is stopped while hot and the vehicle is parked for a short period. The fuel in the line near the engine does not move and can thus heat up sufficiently to form a vapor lock. The problem is more likely in hot weather or high altitude in either case.

What can be done to prevent this? This might infact be happening since its been so hot lately.

Fabricate a return line to the tank to prevent vapour lock, It won't entirely fix the problem of fuel in the carb boiling, but the vapour has somewhere to go as new fuel is pushed up.
I had major problems with this on a slant six powered Dodge truck, I installed an electric pump bypassing the mechanical one forethis purpose, i only used it for hot starts though, the pump was designed for a morris Minor with 1098 thundering ccs!.

I got around today once the sun went down and removed the fuel pump, it had an edelbrock performance fuel pump. I think its bad I can pump it manually pretty easily and has a lot of play in the arm. The new Autozone one is really stiff I can hardly move it and when I do I can feel air being pushed out. One problem though. The edelbrock only has a connection from the fuel tank and one going to the Carb. The one autozone gave me has 3 nipples to attach hoses too. Do I block off one of them?

Anyone? I need to get this back on the road tonight..any help is appreciated

Just go back and get one without a return. The one you have is for a car with a fuel return line. It keeps vapor lock from happening or lessens the chances by returning un used fuel or excess pressure back to the tank.
